The £24m Eberechi Eze Tottenham transfer alternative Thomas Frank loves amid James Maddison blow

5 days ago 35

We are now in the final month of the summer transfer window and Tottenham have plenty to address over the coming weeks. Fans are concerned that the Lilywhites haven't done enough in the market ahead of the 2025/26 season, with those fears only strengthened by the team's 4-0 defeat against Bayern Munich on Thursday evening.

Their humbling in Bavaria has left supporters feeling rather worried about Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain and also their return to the Champions League next month. football.london reported earlier in the week that a new No.10 and a senior centre-back are priorities for the club in the transfer market.

Tottenham were in desperate need of a new No.10 prior to the news that James Maddison will miss the vast majority of the season as he needs to undergo surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. The devastating injury blow should hopefully see the club spring into action and sign a player for the role ASAP.

Spurs are rather light in that area of the pitch right now as Dejan Kulusevski "is out for a long time" himself with a knee injury. Lucas Bergvall and Pape Matar Sarr may be pushed further upfield into an advanced role going on Frank's current predicament, with Wilson Odobert and Mohammed Kudus also able to play there if not utilised out wide.

Eberechi Eze is undoubtedly the choice of many Tottenham fans going on the incredible levels he has produced for Crystal Palace in recent seasons. The England international has a £67.5million release clause in his contract, which is slightly higher than the £60million clause Tottenham activated in Morgan Gibbs-White's old Nottingham Forest deal before there was a major twist and he ended up penning fresh terms at the City Ground.

Following Frank's appointment as Tottenham boss, there was plenty of talk of the Dane returning to former club Brentford and raiding them for Bryan Mbuemo and Yoane Wissa. Mbuemo has since joined Manchester United and Wissa could now be heading for Newcastle United ahead of the new term.

There was barely any mention of Mikkel Damsgaard swapping Brentford for Tottenham and that is perhaps a surprise given the incredible levels he produced for the Bees last season. While it was Mbuemo and Wissa constantly dominating the headlines, Damsgaard himself deserved his fair share of the plaudits for the integral role he was playing.

His importance to Frank's team may have escaped the attention of many Premier League fans in general but Brentford supporters were well aware of what he was producing week in, week out. In total, he registered three goals and 11 assists in 43 games in all competitions and he also won the club's player of the month award four times in a row in the first part of the campaign.

Signed from Sampdoria in the summer of 2022, the 25-year-old endured a slow start to life at Brentford but everything finally clicked into place last season and he shone as a result. A lot of patience was required when it came to getting the very best out of the player but is was certainly worth the wait for Frank and Co.

“Mikkel has been really good for us. Perhaps our best player, together with Bryan Mbeumo,” Frank told Viaplay (via Sport Witness ) when asked about his fellow countryman back in January. “It is a mixture of the fact that it has been a long period of time when he was out, so it took him time to get into gear. As he got into gear, he picked up another injury and it took him a while to get back up.

“During that he has become stronger and can now withstand the amount of training and intensity that must be played with when you play for us and me in the Premier League.

“Right now, he is on his way to being one of the most important – if not the most important – in terms of tying things together. He has good figures for goals and assists, but it is just as much the third-last pass, because he ties things together and makes things happen, that makes him dangerous.”

Mainly operating as an attacking midfielder, Damsgaard, who is valued at £24million by Transfermarkt, can also play on the left-wing, in central midfield and he has also played a few games from the right. He certainly offers versatility but it's clear to see that he is best utilised as an attacking midfielder where he can pull the strings.

In Tottenham's hour of need, Damsgaard maybe should be a player the club consider when it comes to bringing in a brand new No.10 for the 2025/26 campaign.
