The massive expansion of the Etihad Stadium is set to be unveiled later this year

This is how Manchester City's new £300m entertainment zone will look when it opens later this year. New CGI images have been released today as it was revealed the huge 3,000 capacity venue will be known as Medlock Square, after the river which runs beneath the nearby car park.

Billed as a 'year-round hub for culture, leisure and entertainment', it's aimed at attracting visitors to the Etihad campus even when City aren't playing or if a gig's on at Co-op Live. It will include bars, restaurants and cafes, a sky-walk, giving views over the Manchester skyline, a zip-wire and a three storey office block.

A new hotel built as part of the development is already open. In the blurb that accompanied the latest CGI images, City Football Group said Medlock Square 'marked a new chapter' in the Etihad Campus and was 'designed to serve both everyday visitors and major event audiences, the mix will provide a high-quality hospitality offer throughout the week and across the event calendar'.

The fan zone is being built as part of the ongoing expansion of the North Stand, which will add 7,000 seats taking the Etihad's capacity above 60,000. But it's not clear exactly when the new stand will open.

Senior club officials were hopeful last year that it would be January but we are now more than a month past that. An FAQ on the club website says that it is 'due to open before the end of the season, although a date has not yet been confirmed'.

Speaking at a topping out ceremony in May last year, City Football Group COO Roel de Vries said: "This is a proud moment for Manchester City and for everyone involved in the Club’s project to create a year-round entertainment destination at the Etihad Campus."

City say more details about Medlock Square will be announced in the coming weeks ahead of opening later this year.
