Thierry Henry could be left with egg on his face with Premier League title prediction

3 months ago 147

Thierry Henry has overlooked Liverpool in his prediction for the 2025/26 Premier League title, despite the Reds’ dominant campaign last season.

Under Arne Slot’s leadership, Liverpool clinched a record-equalling 20th English league title, finishing a remarkable 10 points clear of second-place Arsenal. Many consider Liverpool the team to beat this summer, with the club's recruitment widely praised. Jeremie Frimpong was the first major arrival, followed by a record-breaking move for Florian Wirtz. Milos Kerkez then joined to further strengthen the squad ahead of the new campaign.

Now, Liverpool is targeting a new striker to complete its attacking lineup after reportedly agreeing personal terms with Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike and could add another player before the end of the transfer window.

It seems the rest of the Premier League is left chasing shadows as Liverpool sets the pace.

Still, that hasn't deterred Henry from backing his former club to finally break its long title drought. The Arsenal legend believes the 2025/26 season will be the one where the Gunners end their 20-plus-year wait for a league crown—a feat last achieved when Henry himself led the line during their golden era.

Arsenal has finished as runners-up in each of the past three seasons, consistently falling just short. While many expected the Gunners to capitalize should Manchester City stumble, it was Liverpool who seized the moment last term, powering to the title in the Reds' first season under Slot.

Despite that, Henry remains confident that Mikel Arteta’s side now has the experience and resilience to go one step further and reclaim domestic glory in 2026.

He said: “Do I think that Mikel Arteta is doing a great job? Tremendous job. Do I think he should get the sack? Hell no. Am I going to think we’re going to win the league this year? Yes.

"It’s been good, it’s got to be better. I do understand when people keep asking whether we are going to go over the line.

"But [across five years], if we come second, second, second, it doesn't mean we are going to come short again. You're not going to win all the time. But to be in a position to win, you need to first and foremost be in a position to know how to win - that's what they've done recently, and hopefully, they can go over the line."

It’s no surprise that Henry is backing Arsenal to win the title, given his deep ties to the club. But sentiment aside, the Gunners — like the rest of the chasing pack — still have significant ground to cover if they’re to unseat Liverpool in the 2025/26 campaign.

Having already secured key figures like Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk on new deals back in April, Liverpool’s new sporting director Richard Hughes has masterminded a summer of high-impact signings. The result is a squad that looks even more formidable than the one that stormed to the title just months ago.

Arsenal had a golden chance to end its title drought last season, especially after an unexpected dip from Manchester City. But while the opportunity was there, the Gunners failed to match the consistency, composure, and grit shown by Slot’s Liverpool side across the campaign.

Even when Liverpool hit a few bumps in the road, Arsenal couldn’t capitalize. The possible arrival of Viktor Gyokeres would certainly sharpen Arsenal's attacking edge, yet doubts remain over whether Arteta’s men have developed the ruthless mindset needed to finish the job.

The Gunners may well mount another serious challenge this season, but as things stand, Liverpool is the deserved favorite heading into August’s big kick-off.
