Thierry Henry insists he wasn’t surprised by Mohamed Salah’s return to Liverpool’s squad despite the winger’s outburst against the club and Arne Slot earlier this month.
Salah was back on the bench against Brighton on Saturday, and was quickly called upon at Anfield just a week after he delivered an extraordinary tirade against the club in which he accused it of throwing him “under the bus”.
He also claimed that his relationship with Slot had broken down, while suggesting that he could play his final game for Liverpool before heading off to the Africa Cup of Nations this week, which led to him being dropped from the squad for the Champions League game against Inter Milan.

Although the initial discussions were clearly successful, the 33-year-old’s future is still unclear, with his representatives set to continue talks with the club while he’s away on international duty.
Salah’s return against Brighton no doubt surprised some, given the manner in which he had launched his attack against the club just a week earlier, although Arsenal legend Henry wasn’t taken aback.
“No, not surprised at all, and it’s not my decision,” Henry told Betway.

“Whether he is going to play and stay at Liverpool is not on me, it’s on Arne Slot and his team. I only commented on how and when he did what he did.
“I understand the emotion and frustration, I used to be a player, so I understand Mo Salah. I just didn’t understand how and when he did it.
“We’re talking about one of the greatest in the Premier League. I’m not surprised he came back into the team, and I was so happy with the reception of the Liverpool fans because they also understood him. To be fair, I didn’t have any doubt about that.”

Liverpool’s supporters came in for more praise from Henry for their reaction to both Slot and Salah during the fallout, with both having been cheered during the games against Inter and Brighton.
Henry also lauded Slot for his handling of the situation, amid what has been a difficult second season in charge for the Dutchman after winning the Premier League title.
“It’s weird, because what’s happening at Liverpool this year, I was expecting last year. Not in terms of the turmoil, but in terms of the results.

“I thought maybe Arne Slot was going to struggle, but he showed us last year that he’s a great manager, and now he’s showing us the other part that you need to deal with when you’re a manager. You need to deal with people’s egos and the press, but when you are at Liverpool, that’s just how it is.
“I’ve always thought that he’s very honest in what he says after games. What I love about the situation is that in the Inter game, the Liverpool fans sang the name of Arne Slot, and at the weekend they sang the name of Mo Salah.
“They recognized that they had to support Slot against Inter, and Salah at the weekend. So they did what they had to do, let’s squash it and move on.”
