Thomas Frank has spoken about how the news of James Maddison’s ACL injury has gone down internally at Tottenham and whether the club are looking to add an attacking midfielder to the squad following the development.

It was confirmed on Thursday that Maddison had suffered an ACL injury and will miss a significant chunk of the 2025-25 campaign.

Some Spurs fans want to see the club act swiftly to sign a replacement for Maddison, especially given that Dejan Kulusevski also remains sidelined at the moment.

Frank is now lacking an out-and-out number ten in the squad, with Pape Sarr being used in the advanced midfield role in the friendlies against Newcastle and Bayern Munich.

Frank has now admitted that the news about Maddison came as a ‘devastating’ blow to the team as well as the player, confessing that the England international will be a huge miss.

The 51-year-old admitted that the priority is to ensure that the surgery for the attacking midfielder is successful before he begins his long rehabilitation process.

When asked about Maddison being ruled out of the majority of the upcoming campaign, the Dane told Football.London: “I think that’s devastating news for the team and for Maddison. No doubt that we will miss him, and he will miss us.

“So right now, we just need to get through the first difficult spell until the surgery, and then in a few weeks after that there will be a little light that turns on and then he can work forward.”

Frank admits Tottenham are in the market for reinforcements

It has been widely reported over recent days that signing a number 10 has become a priority for Tottenham after Maddison’s injury.

The Spurs head coach confessed that the Lilywhites are not done making signings this summer and are continuing to look for opportunities to strengthen the squad.

When asked if Tottenham are expected to sign an attacking midfielder after the Maddison injury blow, Frank responded: “I think we are definitely in the market in general. Of course, when players get a long-term injury, we need to look into that, but generally, we are in the market, yes.”

When asked if anything was close, he said: “Nobody feels close or far away. I’m not saying anything before there’s anything that is completely 100%.”
