Thomas Frank outlines his plan to improve Tottenham’s infamous injury problems

1 hour ago 2

Thomas Frank has spoken about the measures being put in place at Tottenham to tackle the injury problems that have plagued the squad, with the new manager keen to ensure that last season’s fitness crisis does not repeat itself.

Since completing his move from Brentford to Tottenham Hotspur, Thomas Frank has yet to field a squad with all of his key players available.

Dominic Solanke, Kolo Muani, Dejan Kulusevski, Kota Takai, James Maddison and Radu Dragusin are among those currently sidelined, although this still pales in comparison to the injury crisis that Ange Postecoglou had to contend with last season.

However, despite these setbacks, the Spurs boss has still managed to keep Tottenham competing at a high level, though there have been moments where the lack of rhythm has been evident across performances.

Thomas Frank on Tottenham’s plan to fix injury issues

Speaking football.london, Frank has now revealed the changes being made behind the scenes to address the recurring fitness troubles at Tottenham, with a particular emphasis on improving how the medical, performance and coaching departments operate together.

Spurs would be looking to avoid the problems experienced last season under Ange Postecoglou, where more than 10 players were missing at various points, and some were reinjured almost immediately after returning.

Speaking on Tottenham’s injury situation, the Dane said: “That was one of the big areas we looked into when we came in. I see it as a holistic picture.

“It is between the coaching, performance and medical departments. It cannot be three departments not communicating with each other, it has to be three constantly communicating back and forth. It is how we train, how well we train and how well we plan that.

“All that so far has been good. Touch wood we have not had any soft tissue or muscle injuries which are the big ones we would like to avoid.

“We have had an injury to Kolo Muani which is a dead leg contact injury, then we have Dom miskicking a ball. So we have two relatively unlucky ones. So can we nail and get on top of the muscle injuries? Probably impossible to not have any of those injuries but so far so good and we are very aware of it.”

Spurs focus on long-term fitness management

Frank also went on to explain that the work being done is not just about the immediate situation, but about establishing a long-term plan that will help Spurs maintain availability levels across the season.

He made it clear that training intensity, recovery schedules and overall workload balance remain central to the plan.

He added: “I think it is about workload in training, it is not too little, definitely enough intensity because we train and play with intensity, then I think it is all about the planning – gym, recovery, lots of things.

“1000 per cent [it is crucial to prevent another list of injuries]. If we have plus 90 per cent availability, it is so important.”
