Thomas Frank has admitted why a player like Xavi Simons could have made a big difference for Tottenham against Bournemouth.
There was plenty of optimism among Spurs fans heading into the game, and not too many people would have expected what transpired over those 90 minutes.
The away side completely suffocated Thomas Frank’s side, cutting through them at will, while Spurs struggled to even string a few passes together for the majority of the encounter.
The performance against Bournemouth showed that Tottenham still have work to do in the transfer market, with the Lilywhites’ midfielders and wide players failing to create any chances of note.
Thomas Frank admits Tottenham could have done with Xavi Simons’ magic against Bournemouth
One singing who has already arrived at N17 is Xavi Simons, who received a rousing reception from Spurs fans ahead of kick-off.
The Dutch playmaker may not have been too impressed with what he saw from his new teammates, but Frank is delighted to have him on board and admitted that the 22-year-old can provide the creative spark that the Lilywhites were missing yesterday.
When asked about Simons’ signing, Frank said (via Football.London): “Yeah, yeah, very excited, very happy that we signed him. I think it was a great signing from the club. He can play 10 or left winger, those are the two main positions.
When asked if the Netherlands international’s creativity is what Tottenham were missing against Bournemouth, Frank responded: “I think he can bring on a day where I can say our structure building up and all that, because it’s not only about that.
“Then sometimes you need a player that can do something (clicks his fingers) a little bit out of nothing, go past the player, produce a cross, a shot, a pass, with that extra quality that you need on the day, and that’s what I think he can bring.”
Simons alone will not solve Spurs’ creativity problems
Mohammed Kudus had an off day, which is entitled to after three superb performances so far this season.
However, the lack of penetration from the other flank is a matter of concern, as Brennan Johnson, despite his impressive movement inside and finishing, will never be someone who can go past defenders.
That explains why Tottenham are extremely keen on adding another winger to their squad before Monday’s transfer deadline.
