Thomas Frank has handed out praise to his young midfield trio of Pape Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray, revealing where best he sees the latter within Tottenham’s formation.
Thomas Frank would have been delighted with his side’s opening day performance in the Premier League, following their 3-0 thrashing of promoted Burnley.
Richarlison’s brace and a goal from Brennan Johnson were enough for Frank’s men on Saturday afternoon as they got off to the perfect start.
It was a ten out of ten performance from everyone in Lilywhite, including a young midfield trio of Lucas Bergvall, Archie Gray and Pape Matar Sarr.
Thomas Frank praises Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall after Tottenham win
After the win, Thomas Frank made a point of singling out two of these young midfielders for praise, stressing that while they still have much to learn, they have already shown the kind of qualities that could make them vital to his system.
He said told football.london, when speaking about Gray and Bergvall: “I am very happy. Pape I have praised so much, so I will not say so much about him today.
“I will give the praise a little bit to others. Archie Gray did well, I think. Fine first half, really grew into it in the second half and as a reminder to myself and everyone else young players take a little bit of time.
“It cannot be we put them out there and suddenly they are exceptional. That demands incredible, incredible, incredible talents. Normal, very, very good talents, which I think Archie is and Bergvall is, that demands some time, so happy with his performance. Lucas overall was very good as well. Top actions from both players.”
Why Gray fits the number six role for Tottenham
The most interesting detail from Frank’s post-match comments was his view on where Archie Gray can thrive. When asked about Gray’s future role, the manager made clear that while he is versatile, he sees him best in midfield.
He added: “We need to be aware of not putting players in different positions. I think he is a player that is a flexible player.
“He can definitely play the centre-back and the right-back, but I think he is more natural as a midfielder. But he can play all three positions. I like his dynamic, he is covering a lot of ground, he is good in duels. Good in the pressure and great to carry the ball forward as well.”
