Thomas Frank reveals why he is happy with Tottenham’s January transfer business

Thomas Frank has offered his assessment of Tottenham Hotspur’s January transfer activity, addressing supporter frustration after what many viewed as an underwhelming winter window.

Many Tottenham Hotspur fans were left greatly dissatisfied with the club’s dealings this winter window.

Spurs managed to complete just two signings, bringing Conor Gallagher in for £35 million from Atletico Madrid and Souza for £15 million from Santos.

However, there is a feeling that Tottenham came out weaker rather than stronger in January, given that they are currently missing at least eight first-team players because of injuries.

Tottenham January transfers: Thomas Frank delivers verdict

However, despite the dissatisfaction from not just the fans but also club captain Cristian Romero, who labelled the squad building as disgraceful, Frank struck a more measured tone.

Speaking to the official Tottenham channels, the Spurs boss outlined his view on the club’s business, highlighting both immediate and long-term thinking behind the arrivals.

“We signed Conor Gallagher, who I think is a quality player for the starting eleven. Of course, he needs to perform and no one is promised any position (in the team), but we signed a quality player, and we signed a young player for the future (Souza).

“I think if you compare to a lot of the other Premier League clubs, I think that is very good, and I think where we are (in our journey), I think it is okay.

“We tried to do more, but it was not possible for whatever reason and I have said it the whole time that it is very, very important that we take good decisions and are calm. So it needs to be for the short term and for the long term.”

On fans being concerned that not even an extra loan move was made, Frank added (Football London): “What I like is that the fans are very passionate and they want the best for the club and are very ambitious, which they should be.

“Tottenham is a fantastic club and we should achieve great things. It’s also, you say the challenges, we have a few players out. Some of them are coming back and a lot of them are coming back also this season and hopefully sooner rather than later. So that’s one thing.

“Of course, we look into loan options, of course, we look into other options, but for different reasons, nothing more happened. And I still think it was not like we wanted to buy five players, it was not the case. So we got a very good player in, in Conor Gallagher and a good young one in Souza.”

Board promises and summer expectations at Spurs

Following an underwhelming winter window, the Tottenham higher-ups have promised an ambitious summer transfer window.

The expectation was that, following the cash injection from the Lewis Family, Spurs were supposed to spend big and improve critical areas of their squad, which they failed to do.

Instead, what fans are left with is another promise that ambition will be shown in the summer, which was relayed by Johan Lange following deadline day.

On the ambition he feels at Tottenham, Frank said: “I think this club is very ambitious. I think if it was like this (clicks fingers), easy to get another player in, then I’d be playing Football Manager. I decided that was not as fun as being the Head Coach of Tottenham.

“So it’s never that easy. It’s much more complicated. We all know that. We are very ambitious. We are in different stages of where we want to be, but that’s not to say that we are not ambitious. We are very ambitious.”
