The January transfer window is set to open in a little over 48 hours, meaning Tottenham Hotspur can get right into strengthening their squad.

Reports have claimed that Spurs are looking to strengthen the left-hand side of their squad, with a left-sided centre-back, a midfielder and a left winger among the list of potential targets.

With the window now closing to opening, Thomas Frank now opened up on the possibility of Tottenham taking big strides in the transfer market.

Thomas Frank on Tottenham’s approach to the January transfer window

Speaking about the challenges of the January market and Tottenham’s long-term thinking, Frank explained why patience and sustainability remain central to the club’s decision-making

When speaking to football.london, he said: “I think there is a few things you need to understand. The January window is the most difficult window. So I understand it is a window.

“Everyone is super excited, speaking about it. It will not stop after the 31st of January. That is the way it is.

“As I said, I cannot highlight enough. We are in the market. We are prepared. We are working, but I also think it is super important, as I said before, every decision I take, or I take together with the other guys in terms of decision-making, is for the future of the club.

“So there is no reason to sign a player if you do not think it is for the future of the club, if it is just helping a little bit the next six months. We need to build something sustainable that can be very strong and powerful. That journey takes time, and that journey needs to take good, clever decisions along the way.

“That is maybe not ‘wow’, but good decisions that can make us more stable and more competitive and then we are from there. So we are there, but we will see what is happening.”

Spurs must spend if they are to improve their squad in january

Indeed, the January window can be difficult to navigate, as the best deals are not always on the table, but that does not mean it is impossible to improve your squad in winter.

We have seen signings like Virgil Van Dijk, Luis Suarez and Aymeric Laporte come into sides in the Premier League in January and quickly make an impact on their squads.

However, those players did not move on cheaply, with Van Dijk commanding £75m, Laporte costing £60m-plus and Suarez joining Liverpool for £22.8m, a significant fee at the time, meaning if Tottenham are to sign players who truly move the needle in January, they will need to be ready to spend heavily.
