Thomas Tuchel facing calls to be fired after divisive Jordan Henderson decision

4 hours ago 2

England supporters are at odds over Thomas Tuchel's latest squad selections for the upcoming international break, with Everton playmaker Jack Grealish and former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson sparking the most controversy.

The Three Lions unveiled their squad for the October internationals on Friday. There's no place for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, with former Reds defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is nursing an injury, also omitted from the squad.

Tuchel's team is set to face Wales in a friendly at Wembley Stadium before heading off to Latvia for a World Cup qualifier. The squad features regulars such as Jordan Pickford, Declan Rice, and Harry Kane. However, Tuchel's choices have raised eyebrows among fans. Grealish, despite his impressive form at Everton, has been overlooked.

Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace was another unexpected absentee, with Tuchel opting for Brentford's seasoned pro Henderson instead.

These decisions have fuelled heated discussions among the fanbase.

On X, one supporter expressed confusion: "No Wharton but Jordan Henderson is in. Grealish having [a] great season but no call up? How does this make sense?"

Another fan questioned the selection process: "You have to wonder how someone whose job is to watch English footballers and pick the best ones can possibly not select Wharton and Grealish."

One England fan highlighted Grealish's recent performances: "So Grealish was the best player in the PL last month, and has created more chances than anyone else, but doesn't warrant a place?"

While another took aim at Tuchel: "Jordan Henderson in October 2025, Tommy Tuchel it's time to go."

While some have been grumbling about Henderson's inclusion in the squad, others have jumped to the defence of the former Liverpool skipper, citing his performances for Brentford this season as ample justification.

One supporter remarked: "Anyone complaining about Hendo give your head a wobble, been fantastic for Brentford and this young group needs leaders."

Another chimed in: "Pointless trying to reply to individuals as there's too many but they've clearly not been watching Henderson at Brentford yet seem to be enraged at his inclusion.

"Maybe had a reason to moan before but not with how good he's been playing this season for Brentford."

When quizzed on his squad choices, England manager Tuchel explained: "It's only three weeks now since the last camp and the last win [against Serbia], the last performance. So the question was, why not bring the same group in?

"Because they set the standards, and now it is about creating habits out of it.

"We have unfortunately two injuries at the moment, Tino (Livramento) and Noni (Madueke), and we bring of course Bukayo Saka to replace Noni and Jarell Quansah was a late call-up last time. He will stay in camp."
