Tierney bright, Jorginho impact - How the players who left Arsenal this summer are getting on

7 hours ago 3

The Arsenal squad Mikel Arteta had at his disposal 12 months ago looks extremely different to the Spaniard's current crop of players. The summer transfer window was an extremely busy one for the club, with players both arriving and departing.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cristhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Noni Madueke, Viktor Gyokeres, Eberechi Eze and Piero Hincapie all signed for the Gunners, which meant players had to leave to help fund the aforementioned transfers. Kieran Tierney, Jorginho and Thomas Partey were among the stars to leave and all three have already made impacts at their new clubs.

In total, 12 players departed Emirates Stadium either permanently or temporarily over the summer. Below, football.london takes a look at how they have been getting on since their exits were confirmed...

Kieran Tierney

Tierney quickly became a fan favourite after joining from Celtic in August 2019 and went on to make 144 appearances for the club and even scored on his last appearance against Southampton on the final day of last season. "It'll be hard but it's a happy goodbye," Tierney, who rejoined Celtic on July 1, said in his farewell interview. "I've loved it here, loved every minute of it. There are countless memories that are amazing for me; your debut is always special, and winning the FA Cup as well in the first season. It's a great team, and I’m so close to some of the boys in there. I've been here a long time, so it'll be sad but a happy goodbye."

So far this season, Tierney has made six appearances for his boyhood club and already has two assists to his name. Impressively, he is part of a backline who are yet to concede in the Scottish Premiership, with Brendan Rodgers' side top of the table on goal difference.

Tierney did withdraw from the Scotland squad ahead of games against Denmark and Belarus, however, due to injury, although it remains to be seen how long the full-back will be out for.

Jorginho

Another senior star to leave this summer was Jorginho. The former Chelsea midfielder joined Brazilian club Flamengo and even featured for his new side in the Club World Cup, helping them reach the round of 16 stage where they were knocked out by Bayern Munich, a game which Jorginho scored in.

Since the Club World Cup campaign, Jorginho has racked up a further 11 appearances for Flamengo, with the side currently top of Serie A after 21 matches played. The Italian did sit out of Flamengo's last match after feeling slight pain in his hamstring, but he has since returned to training and is expected to feature against Juventude on September 14.

Thomas Partey

After spending five seasons at Arsenal, Thomas Partey left the club this summer and joined La Liga side Villarreal on a free transfer. The 32-year-old is clearly still getting up to speed as he has so far only made three appearances for the Spanish side, with all of them coming from the bench.

The defensive midfielder is currently away on international duty with Ghana but did not make it off the bench in the 1-1 draw with Chad last Thursday. He may well get some minutes against Mali on Monday evening, though, with the match set to kick-off at 8pm UK time.

Just four days after leaving Arsenal, Partey was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The offences allegedly took place between 2021 and 2022 and involve three women. In a statement announcing his arrival, Villarreal stated: "The club is also aware that the player is currently involved in legal proceeding in England. The player firmly maintains his innocence and denies all charges against him.

"The club respects the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence and will await the outcome of the judicial process, which will be responsible for clarifying the facts of the case. Due to the law in England in relation to ongoing proceedings the club is unable to comment further. Villarreal CF wishes to clearly reiterate its strong commitment to respect and diversity and firmly condemns any act of violence in all its forms, including gender-based violence, discrimination, racism, xenophobia, or any behaviour that undermines the dignity of individuals."

Partey is next due to appear at the Old Bailey on September 15 after he was granted conditional bail at an earlier hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Nuno Tavares

Tavares joined Lazio on loan last season, with the deal including an obligation to buy for around £4.2million. The 25-year-old made 23 appearances in Serie A last campaign and showed his attacking qualities as he finished with eight assists in all competitions.

The former Marseille and Benfica man has played in both of Lazio's games so far this season, a 2-0 loss to Como and a 4-0 win over Hellas Verona.

Marquinhos

The young winger joined Cruzeiro for around £2.5million in June, bringing an end to his three-year stay in north London. The 22-year-old had already been with the Brazilian side on loan and this season has made 27 appearances.

Many of his appearances have come off the bench, however, and he only has one goal and one assist to his name so far. Cruzeiro are currently second in Serie A, three points behind Flamengo.

Karl Hein

Young goalkeeper Karl Hein joined Werder Bremen on a one-year loan last month, with the 23-year-old replacing Michael Zetterer who departed the German side. Due to his move coming so late in the window, the Estonian is yet to feature for his new side, although he was named on the bench in last weekend's 3-3 draw against Bayer Leverkusen.

“The decision to move to Werder was very easy for me," Hein said after the move was confirmed. "It being such a big club with fantastic fans and a great stadium, I didn’t have to think twice. I’m really looking forward to getting started in Bremen."

Takehiro Tomiyasu, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Reiss Nelson and Jakub Kiwior

The six above players have been grouped together because they all are yet to appear for their new clubs, mainly because their moves were only confirmed at the end of the window. Jakub Kiwior joined Porto on a season-long loan, with the Portuguese side having an option to make the move permanent next summer for €27million (£23.4million), of which €2million (£1.7million) is add-ons.

Albert Sambi Lokonga brought an end to his four-year stay in London as he joined Bundesliga side Hamburg for a mere initial £260,000, while Fabio Vieira joined him at Hamburg in a loan deal which does include the option to make the move permanent. Reiss Nelson (loan to Brentford) and Oleksandr Zinchenko (loan to Nottingham Forest) also departed on deadline day and have yet to play for their new clubs due to the current international break.

Takehiro Tomiyasu's contract was mutually terminated over the summer but he has yet to find a new club. The right-back, who moved to the Gunners from Bologna in August 2021, was plagued by injuries in recent years and barely featured last campaign. Football Italia report that AC Milan are ‘considering the opportunity’ to sign the free agent, who can still secure a deal to a new club despite the transfer window closing.
