Fabrizio Romano has provided a big update on the future of a midfielder whom Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly tried to sign in the last two transfer windows.
Even though Spurs boast of some excellent young midfielders in Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Pape Sarr, most Tottenham fans will agree that the club need further reinforcements in the middle of the park.
Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha have been criticised for their inability to progress the ball, and that is something Spurs may need to address this summer.
An England international has been on Tottenham’s radar for many months, but the Lilywhites have been handed some bad news regarding the player.

Tottenham target Kobbie Mainoo set to sign new contract with Man United
Tottenham were reportedly circling over Kobbie Mainoo last summer, and it was once again reported ahead of the January window that Spurs were exploring a deal for the Man United midfielder.
Mainoo caused quite the stir in 2025 when he posted a throwback of himself wearing a Tottenham shirt in his younger days.
The 20-year-old was struggling for game time at Old Trafford at the time, but his situation has changed since Ruben Amorim was replaced by Michael Carrick, under whom the youngster has thrived.
Fabrizio Romano has now revealed that the England international is now closing in on signing a new deal at the Manchester club, with the Red Devils said to be optimistic of reaching an agreement.
Romano wrote on X: “Manchester United are closing in on new deal for Kobbie Mainoo after talks reported since January — valid until June 2031. New deal for Kobbie was a priority since he returned key player under Carrick. Final details needed, not done yet but close + MUFC optimistic.”

Who are the other midfielders on Spurs’ radar?
It has been widely reported that Adam Wharton is Tottenham’s dream midfield signing, but it is going to be difficult for the Lilywhites to secure the Crystal Palace star, given that they will not be in Europe next season.
Tottenham have been credited with interest in Morten Hjulmand, who is expected to leave Sporting Lisbon at the end of the season.
Over recent days, it has also emerged that Spurs have scouted Besiktas captain Orkun Kokcu and have been impressed by the 25-year-old midfielder.
