Danny Murphy has one big concern about Tottenham under Thomas Frank after having watched them closely this season.
Most Spurs fans will agree that while the team has looked defensively excellent so far this season, they have not clicked into gear consistently going forward.
In fact, Frank himself has acknowledged that Tottenham have not done well enough offensively at times this season, but insists that it is only a matter of time before things click into gear in the final third.
However, one Tottenham attacker has stood heads and shoulders above the rest: new signing Mohammed Kudus, who is leading the Premier League for several key attacking metrics this season.
Danny Murphy fires a Mohammed Kudus warning to Tottenham
A couple of days ago, Jermain Defoe even claimed that Kudus has now become Tottenham’s ‘main man’ in attack this season.
That is difficult to argue with, and Spurs certainly needed someone to step up and take the place of Heung-min Son, who had carried a lot of the club’s attacking burden over the last few years.
However, Murphy feels that Tottenham are now too reliant on Kudus and questioned which other attacker can step up for Thomas Frank’s men if the former West Ham man doesn’t .
The former Spurs midfielder told talkSPORT: “They’re (Tottenham) heavily relying on Kudus in the games I’ve watched. And that’s fine, because all top teams have certain players they really rely on.
“And he’s been outstanding, by the way, what a signing. He’s been outstanding and their best player this season by a mile. So maybe they can keep getting away with relying on set plays as a big factor in today’s game.
“I just think sometimes, in the games I’ve seen, I’m thinking, you know, if he’s not doing it, who’s going to open the other team up? Who’s going to make your chances?”
Murphy says new Spurs signing has to do more
The pundit was also clear on which player he expects to raise his levels and share some of the creative burden with Kudus.
He suggested that Xavi Simons has to deliver more than he has in his first one and a half months at the North London club.
Murphy added: “I mean, they’ll expect a little bit more from Simons, because they spent big money on him. But he is a talent, and he’s going to take a little bit of time to get going.”
