Tottenham approach Dougie Freedman but there are two problems in landing him

Tottenham Hotspur are understood to be exploring behind-the-scenes changes, with the club now looking at Dougie Freedman to steady the ship.

While Tottenham Hotspur continue to struggle on the pitch, plans are being made off it to get the Lilywhites back on track.

The appointment of another sporting director is understood to be a priority for Spurs, who are looking to return to their two-sporting-director model following the departure of Fabio Paratici earlier this year.

We reported previously that Spurs had turned to Excel in their search for a new director, while also naming a few candidates currently on the radar of the north London club, including Dougie Freedman and Bournemouth’s Tiago Pinto.

Tottenham approach Dougie Freedman to lead club revamp

According to The Independent, Spurs are now understood to have approached Dougie Freedman, formerly of Crystal Palace, to lead a revamp of the club.

The former Palace director is currently in a lucrative role at Al Diriyah in Saudi Arabia, but the job he did with the Eagles, where he signed some of the club’s best talents, is what has caught the attention of Tottenham.

However, it is understood that much will depend on how Spurs perform on the pitch. Relegation could hinder Tottenham’s budget for next season, which may also prove inhibitive in any prospective negotiations.

Spurs revamp plans could hinge on Premier League survival

With results on the pitch leaving Tottenham in a dire situation, a summer overhaul is vital, although dropping down to the Championship could have a big impact on what sort of revamp Spurs can undertake.

For now, the attention of the Lilywhites remains solely on avoiding a drop, which makes the remaining run of games crucial.

Spurs travel to Liverpool in the Premier League next, before they take on Atletico Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 encounter.

After the European tie, a relegation six-pointer with Nottingham Forest is set to take centre stage in what is a must-win for the north Londoners.
