Fabrizio Romano reveals that Tottenham explored the idea of signing a 20-goal forward before eventually moving for Randal Kolo Muani instead.
After Manchester City made their stance on Savinho clear, with reports claiming Pep Guardiola’s side were unwilling to sell the Brazilian, Tottenham Hotspur had no choice but to turn their attention elsewhere in the market.
One of the names linked with the North London club late in the window was Atalanta’s Ademola Lookman, a player who the Serie A side were said to be open to cashing in on should the right offer arrive.
The Nigerian international had no shortage of admirers across Europe, and Tottenham were amongst them, with reports even claiming that Fabio Paratici was pushing hard to try and get a move for Lookman completed on deadline day.
Fabrizio Romano reveals Tottenham’s transfer stance on Ademola Lookman
Tottenham ultimately failed to land the 20-goal forward, and Fabrizio Romano has now provided an insight into why the deal never materialised.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that Tottenham were seriously considering Lookman before eventually switching their attention to Randal Kolo Muani. The journalist revealed that Spurs even explored a loan deal, but they were quickly shut down by Atalanta.
“He was an option for Tottenham,” Romano said on his YouTube channel. “I can tell you that Tottenham, before going all in for Randal Kolo Muani, considered the possibility to go for Lookman.
“Different players, of course, one is a winger, the other one is a striker, but Tottenham wanted to do a similar deal, maybe a loan, a loan with buy option.
“Atalanta said, forget about that. So Bayern tried with an official bid, rejected. Tottenham thought about this possibility, but was not even a chance. And so Lookman, at the moment, stays at Atalanta unless something crazy happens on the markets that are still open.”
Tottenham clear on Ademola Lookman position
While Tottenham were intent on strengthening the wide areas of their squad, it was evident that Ademola Lookman was never the priority target and was instead viewed as more of a short-term solution.
The club had set their sights on Savinho, and Spurs were even prepared to break their transfer record to secure the Manchester City winger, a move that underlined the level of ambition they had for that position.
Lookman, however, did not fall into the same category, and despite having the financial power to complete such a deal, Tottenham decided against moving for him once Atalanta’s demands were laid out, which made it clear there was simply not enough conviction to push through a transfer.
