Tottenham could do a complete 360 and offer 8-goal forward a new contract

Despite one senior man’s inconsistencies this season, Tottenham Hotspur are changing their stance on him in light of his purple patch over the last month.

Over the last couple of months, we have seen several reports suggest that Spurs want to add a centre-forward to their squad in January.

That is understandable, given that Dominic Solanke is yet to start a match this season due to injury, while Randal Kolo Muani has not set the world alight in a Spurs shirt.

Mathys Tel is still at the start of his career, and the jury is out on whether the Frenchman is ready to lead the line for a Premier League side with European aspirations.

Tottenham could completely change their stance on Richarlison

It has been suggested that Richarlison could be the one to make way for a new striker in January, even though the Brazilian is the club’s top scorer this season with eight strikes across all competitions.

However, Dean Jones has now suggested that Tottenham are now leaning towards turning down any offers for the former Everton man, and they are even considering offering him a new contract.

The journalist told TEAMtalk: “Tottenham might double down on a stance of not letting Richarlison leave in January, by offering the forward an extended contract.

“Spurs are expecting interest in the Brazilian striker ahead of the January transfer window, with both Everton and Fulham believed to be among clubs monitoring his situation.

“Richarlison began Saturday’s match against Liverpool on the subs bench but made a significant impact after being introduced, scoring and almost inspiring a comeback.

“The club are on the lookout for new attacking edge but have also considered blocking any departure in January for him. At the moment, we understand they see no benefit in letting him leave on loan.

“And a sale would depend on the level of bidding and whether they can sufficiently upgrade him in the squad in the next month. If Spurs do decide to keep him on, sources suggest that Tottenham may even look to additionally lengthen his contract.

“Richarlison’s current deal runs until 2027, and any new proposal would be designed to protect his value while also giving the club additional time to assess the future. It comes at a time when Tottenham face a test of patience over boss Thomas Frank, but the club are trying to remain positive.”

Why selling Richarlison in January will not make sense for Spurs

One can understand if Tottenham feel that the 28-year-old is not good enough to be their starting number nine over the long term.

Many may feel that, at best, Richarlison may be a decent backup or a squad player.

However, given the issues Spurs have upfront, it would make little sense for them to handicap themselves even further by letting go of their top goalscorer.

The club may revisit Richarlison’s future at the end of the season, and handing him a new deal may be the best way to protect his value.
