Tottenham could revisit a move for one of their biggest summer targets in January, after talks went right down to the wire on deadline day, and the player himself was keen on making the switch.
While Tottenham Hotspur did manage to address areas of their squad that required more depth in the summer window, several positions were left untouched, leaving supporters to wonder whether the club had done enough to keep pace with their rivals.
Tottenham secured six signings in total, bringing in an attacking midfielder, a wide forward, a striker, a holding midfielder and a young centre-back, all of which adds variety to Thomas Frank’s squad.
Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel also saw their loan moves made permanent, strengthening the spine of the team, but Tottenham still missed out on one of their most ambitious targets, Savinho, despite chasing the Brazilian for much of the summer.
Tottenham could return for Manchester City winger Savinho
TBR Football are now reporting that despite Tottenham’s failure to land Manchester City winger Savinho in the summer, the north London club could make a move for the Brazil international in January.
Manchester City, who have often allowed players to leave when they push for a move, decided to block Savinho’s transfer even though the winger was open to joining Tottenham.
Spurs were even prepared to break their transfer record to secure Savinho, but Pep Guardiola’s side refused to entertain offers, with City making it clear that the winger was not for sale.
Football journalist Graeme Bailey explained just how far Tottenham were willing to go for him, telling TBR Football: “The fact that Tottenham were willing, in theory, to break their transfer record for Savinho tells us everything.
“There were still some talks on Monday morning, Spurs still had a little hope of trying to persuade City to sell. The player wanted the move, he was impressed with Spurs, and they were impressed with him – they liked his attitude, and him wanting the move is always a green flag to a club.”
“The situation could now hinge on Savinho’s game time over the coming months, with Guardiola expected to decide whether he can be part of City’s rotation once he returns from a minor knock that has kept him out at the start of the season.”
Bailey added: “I think there is a real chance Spurs revisit this one, but much will depend on the coming months and how much he features for City.”
Spurs still have wide attacking depth despite Savinho setback
Even without Savinho, Thomas Frank still has plenty of wide attacking options to call upon, with Mohammed Kudus, Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel all capable of playing out wide and giving Spurs different looks in the final third.
Xavi Simons and Kolo Muani also bring further flexibility as they can both operate in wide roles if required, something that gives Frank the chance to adapt tactically depending on the opposition.
Dejan Kulusevski remains sidelined through injury, but with a return pencilled in for later this year, his comeback would strengthen Tottenham’s attacking options even more and hand Frank another proven wide threat.
