Tottenham emerge as surprise candidates to sign £15m Manchester City defender

Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for a Manchester City centre-back after missing out on Piero Hincapie to Arsenal.

Tottenham Hotspur have already signed two new centre-backs this summer. Kevin Danso made a permanent move to North London, while Kota Takai earned a move from J-League 1 to the Premier League.

It seems Spurs are interested in bolstering the centre of their defence once more before the transfer window draws to a close on Monday night.

There was the possibility of an arrival from Bayer Leverkusen, as Tottenham reportedly made a bid to sign Piero Hincapie. However, Spurs denied having any interest in Hincapie, claiming contact was never made.

Another name to have been mentioned over the past 24 hours is Manchester City defender Nathan Ake. The 30-year-old was brought off the bench against Tottenham last Saturday to replace the injured Rayan Ait-Nouri, as City twice conceded to Thomas Frank’s side.

Tottenham join the race to sign Manuel Akanji

Despite the Ake links, Fabrizio Romano has revealed there is another Manchester City defender who has caught the club’s eye.

Spurs have made an approach for Manuel Akanji, although he is not the only name on their shortlist. Agreeing a deal will not be easy, because AC Milan are also interested in securing the Switzerland international.

Akanji looks likely to leave Manchester City

Akanji only made 26 Premier League appearances last season, but he did struggle with adductor injuries. The 30-year-old missed more than 15 matches due to his troubles and he is yet to appear at all this season.

Rather than Akanji sitting on the bench all season, or not even making the matchday squad, he could move away from Manchester City in the final days of the transfer window.

Luka Vuskovic has just completed a season-long loan move from Tottenham to Hamburg, which further indicates that Spurs are serious about agreeing a deal to sign Akanji. He would certainly be a good backup option for Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven
