Diego Simeone has made a statement regarding Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, who has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this summer.
Spurs and Atletico meet this evening for a Champions League round of 16 tie at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, with the home side having to overcome a three-goal deficit from the first leg to progress to the next round.
Romero is expected to start against Atletico after missing the clash against Liverpool with an injury.
The Spurs captain’s future has been the subject of much speculation over recent months, and he will come up against a side whose interest in him has been well documented.

Diego Simeone admits he is a big admirer of Tottenham’s Cristian Romero
According to various sources, Atletico Madrid are ready to try again to land Romero at the end of the season after failing with a move for the centre-back last summer.
Simeone’s latest words will do little to quell those rumours, with the 55-year-old admitting that he is a big admirer of the Tottenham defender’s ability as a player as well as his personality.
The Atletico boss said about Romero (via George Sessions): “I speak from a point of view as an Argentina fan. I admire his personality, his character, his defensive work and his football ability on the ball… I have seen him play more games for national team than I have for Spurs, but I’m a big fan of him.”

Spurs may be resigned to losing Romero amidst heavy interest
Atletico are not the only La Liga side chasing the Tottenham star, with cross-city rivals, Real Madrid, also credited with an interest in Romero.
Additionally, some sources have suggested that Barcelona are also big fans of the Spurs captain, which means that we could see a three-way Spanish battle for the centre-back’s services.
This comes amidst a recent report in The Telegraph, which claimed that Spurs are coming around to the idea of cashing in on Romero this summer.
There is allegedly a growing belief at the club that it would be best for the two parties to go their separate ways.
