Tottenham fans react to Cristian Romero’s explosive attack on the Spurs hierarchy

Cristian Romero’s post-match comments after Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Bournemouth have now left the club’s fanbase split.

Tottenham Hotspur will have been hoping for a much better season under Thomas Frank this term, following their dismal 17th-place finish last campaign under Ange Postecoglou.

But things have been far from rosy for Spurs, who find themselves sitting in 14th place, just six points above 17th-placed Nottingham Forest.

Frustration looks to be gathering steam in N17, with fans far from pleased with recent displays, and it now appears to have crept into the dressing room.

Tottenham fans react as Cristian Romero calls out club hierarchy after Bournemouth defeat

Following Tottenham’s most recent 3-2 defeat in the Premier League to Bournemouth, Cristian Romero took to social media to send a message to Spurs supporters.

The Argentine made sure to thank the travelling fans and offer his apologies before going on to deliver a pointed statement aimed above the playing staff, saying: “At times like this, it should be other people coming out to speak, but they do not – as has been happening for several years now. They only show up when things are going well.”

The words of the captain appear to have struck a chord with Spurs supporters, who were quick to offer mixed reactions across social media.

One Tottenham fan wrote: “My captain!!!🤍,” a sentiment echoed by several others who backed his stance, while others were far less impressed with the Argentine’s comments.

One reply read: “Would mean a lot more if he would just f****ng defend,” while another added: “You guys have shown since last season how poor you are, that is the bottom line. Instead of having some pride after luckily winning Europa this season, you could have shown your worth by improving overall as a team, but you have shown nothing has changed. So your only message is to win.”

Another Tottenham supporter questioned the message itself, saying: “Who needs to come out and say what? That he should not be captain and him and Pedro Porro are to blame for a lot of the goals we concede?”

while one more commented: “He is right, his game at the start of the season was decent but has deteriorated like the rest of the players and club. The level has dropped to last season’s standard they got away with because of the UEL. Worst team to watch in the league. Even Wolves against Arsenal and Manchester United were better.”

Others were more blunt in their criticism, with one fan posting: “Never seen a club apologise more to its fans lol. Just start winning, boys,”

while another added: “Who is this wally referring to? I am sick of the lot of them. Rather than hiding behind a keyboard, he should have come out and done an interview after the game instead of sending Vicario again. He is just as much of the problem as all the other players we have.”

Spurs frustration reflects deeper issues beyond one statement

This is not the first time Romero has taken a swipe at the Tottenham hierarchy, having done something similar last season following defeat to Chelsea, where he claimed there was simply not enough investment in the squad.

While the ownership does carry its fair share of criticism, it cannot always be used as a deflection for the performances currently on display.

Yes, there is a clear need for reinforcement and greater depth, but at the very least, these players must do their jobs properly and start winning football matches.
