Eric Dier scored Monaco’s equaliser from the penalty spot against Manchester City, and the former Tottenham man said something funny about his former Spurs teammate after the game.
The feeling of handing Man City a late heartbreak is not new to Dier, who was part of Tottenham sides that did the same on a couple of occasions.
The Lilywhites famously eliminated Pep Guardiola’s men in the quarterfinal of the Champions League after some late drama in 2019 on their way to the final.
It was deja vu for the former Tottenham centre-back, whose Monaco side held City to a draw, and he himself played a big part in helping the Ligue 1 side salvage a point.
Eric Dier makes Harry Kane joke after scoring a penalty against Man City
The former Tottenham man was directly involved in the incident that won his side a late penalty, with John Stones penalised for catching him in the face with a high boot inside the box in the dying stages of the game.
With the score poised at 2-1, Dier himself stepped up to take the spot kick, and he converted it with ease, sending Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way.
The former Tottenham centre-back decided to dedicate his goal to Spurs legend Harry Kane, admitting that he has had a few tips on penalties from the England captain over the years on taking penalties.
Dier told TNT Sports after the 2-2 draw: “I dedicate it (his goal) to my friend Harry [Kane], because maybe he’s watching this channel. I watched him for a very long time, so I learned a few pointers and I’ve taken them here.”
Tottenham will have a Dier reunion this month
Tottenham will have a reunion with the England international as they travel to Monaco for their next Champions League match on October 22.
Dier was a fantastic servant for Spurs, making 365 appearances for the North London club over his decade-long spell.
The defender became a much-maligned figure towards the end of his time at Tottenham, but his professionalism and his commitment were never really in question.
One would thus expect the travelling Spurs contingent to Monaco to give the 31-year-old a great reception.
