Tottenham fans will love what Spanish media are saying about Pedro Porro

Pedro Porro completed 90 minutes for Spain in the demolition of Turkey on Sunday, and the Spanish media are extremely impressed with the Tottenham star’s performance.

The Spurs right-back has had a mixed start to the season. In gameweek one, Porro recorded the most passes into the opposition box across the whole Premier League.

That performance showed that his passing and crossing can be a huge asset for this version of Tottenham under Thomas Frank, who are far more direct than they have been over the last two seasons.

However, the full-back’s defensive weaknesses were exposed in the 1-0 loss against Bournemouth, with Antoine Semenyo having the beating of him in almost every single one-v-one.

In fact, no defender across the Premier League has been dribbled past more times than Porro this season.

Tottenham’s Pedro Porro praised for his defensive showing for Spain

The 25-year-old got the nod to start at Spain away at Turkey on Sunday night, and La Roja delivered a masterclass, emerging 6-0 winners.

Porro did not put a foot wrong, showing his class on the ball, but interestingly, it is his defensive contribution that he has been praised for by the Spanish press.

Diario AS wrote about the right-back: “He had an excellent performance, as he did last Thursday in Sofia. He has a defensive profile and fills the space vacated by Lamine, focusing on attacking on the right.

“The right back position, which was one of the national team’s weak spots, is now approaching the level of the left flank.”

Mundo Deportivo wrote about Porro’s display against Turkey: “His forays down the right flank allowed Lamine to be very present in the attack.”

Will Thomas Frank be tempted to try Djed Spence at right-back?

There is no doubt that so far this season, Porro has been overshadowed by Djed Spence, who continues his monumental rise.

While the Spaniard’s quality on the ball is unquestionable, we know that Thomas Frank prioritises clean sheets above all else.

The Dane tended to prefer good one-v-one defenders at full-back at Brentford, and he might be tempted to use Spence at right-back over Porro now that Destiny Udogie is back fit.
