Tottenham full-back target could be available as a free agent next summer

One Tottenham academy graduate, who Spurs reportedly have an interest in re-signing, could be available on a free transfer next summer, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

While Spurs reinforced their midfield and added plenty of firepower to their attack in the summer, they barely strengthened their backline, with Kota Takai being the only defender to arrive through the door.

That is something that the Lilywhites reportedly want to remedy in the summer, with reports indicating that Tottenham are already looking at potential defensive reinforcements in January.

Last week, it emerged that Spurs are eyeing re-signing one of their academy graduates, who is adept at playing at left-back and centre-back, but a new update has suggested that a deal may not be possible in January.

Tottenham may have to wait until next summer to sign Dennis Cirkin

The previously mentioned report came from TBR Football, who claimed that Spurs are eyeing a shock move to re-sign Sunderland’s Dennis Cirkin, who finds himself out of the Black Cats starting eleven at the start of the season.

The left-back was rated highly while coming through the ranks at Spurs, but he left in 2021 for the Stadium of Light without making a senior appearance for the North London club.

However, Pete O’Rourke has now pointed out that the 23-year-old is in the final year of his contract, and thus may prefer leaving on a free next summer.

The journalist told Football Insider about Cirkin: “He’s in the final year of his contract at Sunderland, and it remains to be seen if he will sign a new deal at the Stadium of Light.

“It’s a difficult one for Cirkin because he’s missed the start of the season with an injury and he’s yet to play, so he’s going to find himself down the pecking order.

“They’ve brought in Reinaldo on a free from Atletico Madrid and Masuaku, the former West Ham player, so there’s a lot of competition for the left-back position.

“Cirkin could find his first-team chances limited this season, and in the final year of his contract, he might decide to see what his options are as a free agent.

“The decision will be his to make. Will he want to stay at Sunderland if he’s not playing, or will he want to move on and see if he can play regular first-team football?”

Why Cirkin is unlikely to consider a Tottenham return

One can understand why Spurs are tempted to re-sign Cirkin as he can cover at left centre-back in a back three and can be a cover at left-back, while he also counts as homegrown and club-trained.

Reports indicate that Cirkin is frustrated by his situation at Sunderland and may want to leave in search of game time.

However, the Tottenham academy graduate will know that he is highly unlikely to get into Thomas Frank’s starting eleven, and he thus will not be tempted to return to Spurs if he is prioritising regular game time.
