Tottenham Hotspur have stepped up their interest in an exciting La Liga winger, but they face competition from Aston Villa for the player.
Spurs strengthened their attack significantly in the summer with the additions of Mathys Tel, Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani.
However, reports indicate that the Lilywhites want to do more, with some sources claiming that Tottenham are targeting more ‘elite players’ in January.
According to a report from Spain, Spurs are now showing keen interest in landing a winger who has three assists in his first three La Liga outings of the season.
Tottenham have edge over Aston Villa in race for Sevilla star Ruben Vargas
This update comes from Fichajes, who say that Ruben Vargas’ consistent displays for Sevilla have caught the attention of Tottenham.
It is revealed that Sevilla turned down a late approach from Villarreal for Vargas in the summer, but Tottenham Hotspur have now stepped up their pursuit of the wide-man ahead of the January window.
Spurs want to add more depth to their attack in order to compete on multiple fronts and are now ready to turn their attention to the Swiss international.
Aston Villa are also keen on landing Vargas, with the Midlands club believing that he is a good fit for their project.
However, it is suggested that Tottenham would have the upper hand over Villa in the race for the former Augsburg man, due to their bigger financial muscle and more ambitious sporting project.
Sevilla’s and Ruben Vargas’ stance revealed
Fichajes say that Sevilla are aware of the interest of the Premier League duo in their star man and know that they will face an ‘important decision’ in the coming months.
While the club appreciate Vargas’ growth, there is a realisation that they cannot turn down a tempting offer as they could use the funds to strengthen other areas of their squad.
The publication adds that the 27-year-old would welcome the opportunity to move to the English top-flight in January or next summer.
