Tottenham Hotspur have moved on fast after embarassing Eberechi Eze failure

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has explained Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer plan after Arsenal hijacked their move for Eberechi Eze in embarrassing fashion.

Until yesterday evening, it was widely reported that Eze was bound for Tottenham, who had struck an agreement with Palace after lengthy negotiations.

Spurs fans were convinced the deal was in the bag, and many were already speculating on how Eze would elevate Thomas Frank’s attack.

However, disaster struck on Wednesday evening as their North London rivals made a move for the Eagles star after Kai Havertz picked up a knee injury.

According to reports, Eze has now given the green light to join Arsenal after the Gunners agreed to meet Crystal Palace’s asking price.

How were Arsenal allowed to hijack Tottenham’s Eberechi Eze deal?

It has now been revealed by Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge that Tottenham Hotspur had an agreement in place with the Eagles for Eze yesterday.

However, the South London club wanted the attacking midfielder to feature in their Europa Conference League playoff this evening. This opened the door for Mikel Arteta’s men to swoop in and tie up a deal for the 27-year-old.

Bridge adds that Tottenham soon accepted that Eze had chosen to complete a move to the Emirates instead, and have already moved on to other targets with just 12 days of the window left.

This reflects badly on Spurs’ negotiating strategy

Spurs will argue that they were not at fault for the delay and that it was Palace who wanted Eze to play the Europa Conference League game.

However, when a huge transfer opportunity like this one opens up, one would expect the club to act with urgency, as there is always the risk of a hijack.

Based on the reports over the last week, it appears that Tottenham took their own time to try and negotiate down the price, believing that they were in a one-horse race, and they have paid dearly for it, missing out on a signing who would have been a game-changer for the club.
