Tottenham learn true cost of Premier League relegation as Johan Lange thrown transfer curveball

Johan Lange will have to rethink his 'big ambitions of strengthening the team' if Tottenham Hotspur get relegated from the Premier League

Stefan Borson reckons that Tottenham Hotspur could lose up to £200m if they're relegated from the Premier League this season. After a disastrous start to the year, failing to win any of their last 10 games in the English top-flight, the Lilywhites have been dragged into a fight for survival.

Spurs are currently 16th in the table, and just four points adrift of the bottom three. Although Tottenham are widely regarded as one of the 'big six', relegation to the Championship could lead to significant financial implications.

If the Lilywhites were to go down, they'd receive a series of parachute payments to soften the blow. But in turn, they'd also miss out on various lucrative streams of revenue, such as Premier League prize money and sponsorship opportunities.

"I think from a commercial perspective, there are two parts to it," said Borson, speaking to Football Insider. "One thing is true that the stadium has allowed them to generate commercial revenue from non-footballing events, and that obviously stays the same.

"There’s no impact there, whether they’re in the Premier League or not. Then the other part of it is what happens with the sponsors.

"We already know from a number of press articles that some of the sponsors are twitchy about relegation, either have relegation clauses, or intend to cancel completely, so of course, you’ll have some impact commercially. Let’s say it’s £50m at least."

The former Manchester City financial adviser continued: "They’re going to lose UEFA money because it’s now clear that unless Tottenham can win the Champions League this season, they will not have European football next season.

"I would think you’re looking at a £150m, £175m, maybe a £200m of a loss in revenue if they were relegated."

Relegation would be quite the curveball for Johan Lange, who has already revealed he has 'big ambitions of strengthening the team'. In an interview with club media shortly after the January transfer window slammed shut, the Tottenham sporting director said: "The summer market is where eight or nine out of 10 players, they move clubs, so we will go into the summer window with big ambitions of strengthening the team.

"We know there'll be more movements, we know there'll be more opportunities, so the plans are already, can you see, drawn up. We have a clear picture of which position and also which profiles.

"Could we have brought one or two more in this January window? We would have been delighted to do so, but that was not a possibility. So, we are looking forward to the summer, now we focus on the rest of the season and that is very, very important as well because we have big objectives.

"We're still in the Champions League. We want to, of course, be higher in the Premier League and then myself and others will have our eyes already now directed towards the summer transfer window."
