Tottenham legend just set Thomas Frank a target only one man has achieved in 17 years

Teddy Sheringham has been impressed with Thomas Frank’s start at Tottenham, but the former Spurs striker insists that the Dane has not justified his appointment yet.

Many Spurs fans disagreed with the club’s decision to sack Ange Postecoglou after he delivered Tottenham’s first trophy in 17 years.

However, Frank has quickly managed to win over the Spurs fan base, owing to the defensive organisation which he has brought to the club.

Under the Dane, the Lilywhites have managed five clean sheets in seven matches across all competitions, but Sheringham believes he has a long way to go.

Teddy Sheringham says Thomas Frank has to deliver silverware to Tottenham

Postecoglou boldly announced that he always wins trophies in his second year, but his successor has been more circumspect in announcing his ambitions.

Frank has said that he wants Tottenham to be competitive in all competitions, but Sheringham has now insisted that the 51-year-old needs to deliver silverware to justify replacing the Australian.

The former Spurs striker told CoinPoker: “Thomas Frank has been very good at Tottenham so far; he’s had a great start in the dugout. They’re third in the league after five games and on the board in the Champions League, which is an encouraging start.

“I like his style of play and tactics, it’s good to watch, and they’re winning games. Hopefully, they can keep that level of form up and go far in competitions this season.

“They look a lot more solid defensively, which needed improving on last season. The new signings look to be gelling well with the squad, and they’ve got better depth this time around which should stand them in better stead this time.

“That said, we will have to wait and see if it’s any better than Ange Postecoglou winning a trophy. Many criticised the way that he set his teams up, but he was the only manager who finally delivered a trophy in the end, so I think we need to see Thomas Frank do the same thing.”

Postecoglou’s sacking is proof that winning trophies alone is not enough

Winning trophies is the ultimate goal of any club, but the reality is that cup competitions are very unpredictable, and the league table is a much better indicator of how good a team is.

We have seen teams being relegated in the same season after winning cups, and Tottenham themselves might have endured the same fate last season if the three promoted sides were not so poor.

Postecoglou’s sacking after winning the Europa League was proof that winning trophies alone would not be enough. A club of Tottenham’s size should be finishing in the top six.
