Tottenham Hotspur are now reportedly stepping up their efforts to sign a young Serie A centre-back, who is quickly emerging as one of the most consistent defenders in the Italian top-flight.
Thomas Frank has an abundance of centre-backs at his disposal after the arrival of Kota Takai, with the Japanese defender joining Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Radu Dragusin, Kevin Danso, and Ben Davies in the squad.
Additionally, the Dane also has some talented young defenders at his disposal in Alfie Dorrington, Ashley Phillips and Luka Vuskovic.
But given the ongoing speculation over Romero’s future at Tottenham, the Lilywhites are rumoured to be eyeing a move for a Belgian international defender.
Several sources have reported over recent weeks that Spurs see Genoa’s Koni de Winter as a potential Romero replacement.
It has even been alleged by some sources that Tottenham are leading the race to sign Koni De Winter, who has been linked to Vincent Kompany, due to his pace, strength, and quality on the ball.
Tottenham have reached out to Genoa over Koni De Winter
It has now been revealed by The i Paper that Tottenham have made contact with Genoa to ask about the 23-year-old’s availability.
The outlet says that the Italian club have informed Spurs and De Winter’s other suitors that they would be willing to accept £22m for the player.
However, Tottenham face competition for the Belgian from Bournemouth, who view the Genoa man as a replacement for Dean Huijsen, as well as from Inter Milan.
This report backs up what we have heard from Italian publications over recent days by stating that Inter have an advantage in the race for De Winter as the defender would prefer to remain in Serie A.
Is this a sign that Cristian Romero’s future is still up in the air?
Over the past few weeks, a number of outlets have suggested that Atletico Madrid have given up on Romero after being unable to get Tottenham to the negotiating table.
However, it was claimed by Fichajes earlier this week that Real Madrid may now be ready to turn their attention to Romero as new boss Xabi Alonso looks to shore up his defence.
If Tottenham have now made contact with Genoa regarding De Winter, that may be a sign that the North London club still fear losing their vice-captain.
