Manchester City are willing to let a Tottenham target leave for the right fee this summer, but two other clubs are battling the Lilywhites for the 22-year-old’s services.
Since Tottenham’s pursuit of Morgan Gibbs-White fell through, McAtee is one of several attacking midfielders heavily linked with a move to North London.
It was even claimed by TBR Football a couple of days ago that Spurs had accelerated their pursuit of McAtee following James Maddison’s ACL injury.
The update claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have been fans of the young attacking midfielder for a long time and even explored a move for him in January.
Manchester City are ready to sell James McAtee to Tottenham for the right fee
The Mirror have now revealed that the England Under-21 international has been told that he is free to leave, with Pep Guardiola keen to trim his bloated squad.
The report confirms that McAtee had emerged as a target for Tottenham after Maddison was ruled out for the majority of the upcoming season.
However, the Lilywhites were battling both Nottingham Forest and Eintracht Frankfurt, who were also circling over the City starlet.
The publication revealed that Frankfurt made a £25m enquiry for McAtee, but the Bundesliga club were informed by City that they would have to pay £40m for the attacking midfielder.
Tottenham are currently locked in talks with Man City over Savinho, but McAtee has not been mentioned in those talks.
More recently, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Forest are closing in on McAtee for a fee in excess of £20m, meaning Spurs could be about to miss out on another number ten target.
Who are the other attacking midfielders on Tottenham’s radar?
McAtee is far from the only number ten Tottenham have their eye on, with some reports suggesting that Spurs could hijack Arsenal’s move for Eberechi Eze.
Tottenham had also launched an enquiry for McAtee’s teammate, Jack Grealish, but he is joining Everton on loan instead.
Meanwhile, the speculation linking Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott with a move to N17 refuses to go away.
