Tottenham receive fresh cash injection after £125m Champions League boost

2 hours ago 1

Villarreal goalkeeper Luiz Junior inadvertently earned £2million for Tottenham Hotspur after being at fault for the own goal that decided their first Champions League match of this season's league phase.

The former Famalicao shot-stopper failed to deal with a Lucas Bergvall cross despite intercepting the delivery before it had any chance to reach Richarlison sliding in at the back post. Instead, the ball squirmed from the goalkeeper's grasp and rolled in at the near post inside four minutes.

Spurs controlled the contest after scoring earlier than they ever have in the competition's history. The win was also a lucrative one.

Clubs in this year's league phase earn £2million per win, so Tottenham are still on course to earn £16million if they continue their 100% start to their European campaign. However, had they not received a helping hand from Luiz Júnior, both clubs would have earned £600,000 in the event of a draw.

But with victory, that £2million takes their combined earnings to over £5million this season. They made £3.4million from participating in the UEFA Super Cup, missing out on £800,000 had they held on to triumph against Paris Saint-Germain.

Spurs, however, have profited plenty from their Europa League win, which is worth £124million to them. They earned £3.6million as a participation fee before receiving £21.5million on route to the final in Bilbao.

Winning the competition was worth another £5million. An additional £8.9m came via the value pillar for being from one of the biggest media rights markets.

City AM also estimates they earned around £34million in matchday revenue from their seven matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Then, after qualifying for the Champions League, their participation alone earns them £15.6million, plus £20million from the competition's more lucrative value pillar and around the same from four more guaranteed home games.
