The stage is set for Tottenham Hotspur's great escape as former Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi is appointed as the new head coach with the immediate task of keeping the club in the Premier League. Spurs currently sit just one point above rivals West Ham United with just seven games left of the season after a dismal revival attempt under Igor Tudor which lasted a mere 44 days.

Tottenham have agreed a deal to appoint Roberto De Zerbi as their new head coach on a five-year contract, which includes significant bonuses if he keeps the club in the Premier League. An official announcement is expected within 24 hours, with De Zerbi set to arrive at Hotspur Way later this week.

The Italian will replace Tudor, who left by mutual consent after a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest and the recent passing of his father. De Zerbi has been out of work since leaving Marseille in February and previously managed Brighton, leading them to the Europa League and an 11th-place finish.

The former Sassuolo coach will be Tottenham's third head coach this season following Thomas Frank's exit and Tudor being shown the door. The club is not in action again until April 12, having been knocked out of the FA Cup in January which may work well to De Zerbi's advantage as his intense style of play will require a lot of work on the training pitch.

However, it does not change matters that the 46-year-old has a mammoth task on his hands with seven games remaining in the season including six-pointers against Wolves and Leeds United while also facing former employers Brighton - which ended on sour terms - before travelling to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the penultimate match of the season.

The bookies already have Burnley and Wolves all but confirmed as two of three to be in the Championship - albeit a miracle - with Tottenham at 6/4 and West Ham at 6/5 showing the tough task the ex-midfielder has on his hands. It took him five matches at Brighton before getting the team winning and that is something he cannot afford here.
