Tottenham Hotspur have announced they are "providing support" for Destiny Udogie after it was revealed he was the Premier League footballer 'threatened with a gun by an agent'

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Destiny Udogie was the Premier League footballer allegedly held at gunpoint in London. A football agent was reportedly arrested and detained on suspicion of brandishing the firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

The footballer was walking down a busy London street with a friend when the incident is said to have occurred. Police were called at 11:14pm on September 6, with the Metropolitan Police having since confirmed that they have launched a full investigation.

It has been claimed that the agent is also under investigation for alleged blackmail and threats against the footballer's friend. He has not been charged and was given conditional bail on September 9.

A Tottenham Hotspur spokesperson said: “We have been providing support for Destiny and his family since the incident and will continue to do so. Given this is a legal matter, we cannot comment any further.”

The Italy international has made 10 appearances this season but has rarely started due to injury issues with just over 300 minutes played.

However, he made his first starting XI appearance in one month against Copenhagen in the Champions League on Tuesday evening in his side's 4-0 win.

Goals from Brennan Johnson, Wilson Odobert, Micky van de Ven and Joao Palhinha sealed the win. Johnson was sent off at 2-0 but the Lilywhites were still able to deliver an impressive attacking display.

Tottenham have secured mostly positive results this season but Thomas Frank has taken some criticism. In last weekend's defeat to Chelsea, Van de Ven and Djed Spence appeared to ignore the Spurs boss when he wanted them to applaud the home supporters.

"I think I understand why you ask the question but that's one of the small issues," he said at a press conference when asked about the incident. "Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence have performed well this season and it's just a small thing."

A few days later, Frank revealed: "Micky and Djed came into my office yesterday [Sunday], unprompted. And just said: 'Want to say sorry for the situation.'

"They didn’t want it to look bad or disrespectful or all of the kind of perceptions you can get in this beautiful media world. That was not the intention at all towards me or the team or the club. They were just frustrated with the performance, the loss and the booing during the game."
