Tottenham tipped to sign striker who is an outsider for England’s World Cup squad

Matt Le Tissier has tipped one of Thomas Frank’s former players to return to the Premier League and Tottenham Hotspur are among those linked with him.

When Thomas Frank arrived at Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, there were expectations that he could look to sign at least one of the players he managed at Brentford.

Bryan Mbeumo was the most prominent Brentford player linked with Spurs, but he snubbed his old manager in favour of pursuing a move to Old Trafford.

The Cameroonian was not the only member of the Bees’ squad to be rumoured to reunite with Frank. Tottenham made an official approach for Yoane Wissa, but he was snapped up by Newcastle United as a replacement for Alexander Isak.

Matt Le Tissier thinks Tottenham could sign Ivan Toney

According to Football Insider, Matt Le Tissier believes Ivan Toney could be called up to the England squad at the World Cup next summer.

However, the forward appears to have been frozen out by Thomas Tuchel, so he could benefit from a move back to the Premier League, with Spurs already rumoured to be interested.

Le Tissier said: “I’d be surprised if he [Tuchel] didn’t take one back-up [to the World Cup], if that’s an Ivan Toney, perhaps, if he carries on scoring at the rate he’s scoring out in Saudi, or even if he comes back in January.

“It’s a possibility. He was linked to Spurs a little bit, so it’s a possibility that he might come back to the Premier League just to try and bolster his chances of playing at a World Cup.

“That’s the option that I think would make a lot of sense to Ivan if he’s really got that burning desire to play at a World Cup finals.

“Ollie Watkins is completely out of form at the moment, low on confidence. So the chance is there if that’s what Ivan wants.”

Toney would be a good signing for Spurs

Tottenham’s most pressing need is for a new left winger and the January transfer window will be a complete failure if this issue goes unresolved.

However, a new quality striker would be a welcome addition to the Tottenham first-team squad and Toney is a good option.

The Al-Ahli man scored 20 Premier League goals in Brentford’s 2022/23 campaign and he has achieved good numbers in the Saudi Pro League. He has played under Frank before too, so he does seem like a very strong candidate that Spurs should consider signing.
