For years, Tottenham supporters have called for the club to immortalise its greatest icons around the stadium in statue form, and it now seems that wish might finally become reality.
Tottenham Hotspur has long maintained a no-statue policy outside the stadium, despite boasting a rich history filled with legendary figures who have worn the shirt with pride.
While several other Premier League clubs have chosen to celebrate their greats with statues or commemorative pieces, Spurs have resisted the trend, instead opting for a more minimalist approach to honouring their past.
Earlier this season, however, there was a shift in tone. The club reinstalled the iconic Bill Nicholson Gates, a move that delighted fans who saw it as a long-overdue nod to one of the club’s most revered figures.
Tottenham CEO Vinai Venkatesham confirms statue plans
In a recent meeting with supporters, Tottenham CEO Vinai Venkatesham has now confirmed that the club is working on plans to introduce statues for some of its most celebrated figures.
Venkatesham revealed that while the idea is still in development, discussions have begun with the club’s Fan Advisory Board to determine the best locations and long-term vision for the project.
The decision of who will be honoured first, however, will rest with the fans themselves.
When asked directly about the possibility of statues for club greats such as Bill Nicholson and Jimmy Greaves, Venkatesham responded by acknowledging the importance of involving supporters in the process, while expressing his own enthusiasm for the idea.
Speaking via the official Fan Advisory Board meeting, he said: “Yes, so good question. I think the Bill Nicholson Gates looks amazing and that was a sort of decision and idea that definitely pre-dates me but involving the Fan Advisory Board we thank them for their input.
“In relation to the question about statues I am in favour of the idea. What we are currently doing at the moment, working with the Fan Advisory Board, is just trying to see around the stadium what are the best locations for statues over the long term so that we can hopefully then make a decision around where the first statue could be.
“Just a bit of a heads-up, the process to make a statue is quite long, but we do have the ambition to do one. In terms of who the statue should be of, we are going to leave that to the fans.”
Spurs fans react as long-time wish nears reality
Since his appointment, Venkatesham has shown a clear willingness to listen to supporters and implement changes that align with their vision for the club’s future.
The return of the Bill Nicholson Gates was one such example, and it now appears more fan-led initiatives could follow.
Tottenham supporters have long voiced their desire to see statues erected around the ground, paying tribute to the greats who defined the club’s identity.
From historic names like Nicholson and Greaves to more recent heroes who carried the team through modern eras, opinions among fans vary. Still, the sentiment remains the same — it is time Spurs visibly honour their legends.
