Tottenham vs FC Copenhagen Champions League preview, team news, and predicted lineup

7 hours ago 41

After a run of disappointing performances domestically, Tottenham Hotspur turn their attention to the Champions League, where they host FC Copenhagen.

It’s fair to say Thomas Frank’s honeymoon period at his new club is well and truly over. Spurs have now lost three of their last five games, winning just once despite a bright start to the season.

Their latest outing, a 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea, was perhaps the worst of the lot, as they recorded just 0.05 xG, which happened to be the lowest in their Premier League history since data collection began.

In Europe though, it’s been a different story. Tottenham Hotspur remain unbeaten after a 1-0 win against Villarreal on the opening day, followed by draws with Bodo/Glimt and then to Monaco as they sit 15th in the Champions League table.

As for the visitors, FC Kobenhavn arrive in north London on the back of consecutive wins but haven’t quite replicated the levels they hit last season when they topped the Superligaen Championship playoff.

Sitting fifth in the league at the moment, they’ve found the Champions League a tougher test this time around. After opening with a 2-2 draw against Bayer Leverkusen, they fell to back-to-back defeats: 2-0 to Qarabag FK and then 4-2 to Borussia Dortmund most recently.

Tottenham team news

Tottenham were handed a welcome boost at the weekend with Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, and Wilson Odobert all returning to the pitch as substitutes from short injury layoffs.

However, Lucas Bergvall suffered a concussion early in the Chelsea match and will miss this one due to concussion protocols. Mohammed Kudus and Djed Spence are also doubts after picking up knocks.

It’s still a fairly lengthy injury list for Spurs, with Radu Dragusin, Archie Gray, Ben Davies, Kota Takai, Yves Bissouma, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Dominic Solanke all unavailable.

FC Kobenhavn team news

Copenhagen are unsure about the fitness of left-back Marcos Lopez after he was taken off during the weekend’s 1-1 draw with Midtjylland.

Gabriel Pereira missed that match due to illness and remains a doubt alongside Rodrigo Huescas and Oliver Hojer. Birger Meling and Magnus Mattsson are the long-term absentees for the Danish side.

Predicted Tottenham line-up

Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bentancur, Palhinha, Simons; Johnson, Richarlison, Odobert

There is unlikely to be many changes to Spurs’ backline, though Djed Spence could step in for Udogie if the Italian isn’t deemed fully fit.

With Bergvall ruled out, Frank has few options in midfield and may have to stick with Xavi Simons, though Pape Sarr could also come into contention.

Up front, Mohammed Kudus has looked fatigued after a heavy run of fixtures – even without his knock – so Brennan Johnson could be an option to freshen things up.

Our prediction

Tottenham may have struggled at home in the Premier League this season, collecting just 4 points from 5 matches, but Europe has been a completely different story.

They’ve not lost a European home game since February 2020, winning 17 and drawing four of their last 21 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Thomas Frank admitted after the Chelsea defeat that he’d never managed a side that created so little and acknowledged that the team’s creativity must improve with time. He knows the fans’ patience is wearing thin, made evident by the boos at full-time after the defeat to Chelsea. A strong performance here could ease some of that frustration.

Keep an eye on Guglielmo Vicario, who’s in peak form and has picked up two Player of the Match awards in his last three appearances.

Xavi Simons, meanwhile, has struggled to adapt to the Premier League’s physical demands but should feel more at home in this competition, so he’ll be eager to make his mark.

Predicted score: Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 FC Kobenhavn
