Tottenham want to sign Roma defender amid Dragusin rumours but Newcastle lead the race

Tottenham Hotspur have their sights set on a 22-year-old right back, but Newcastle have emerged as favourites to seal a deal.

There are a lot of needs in the Tottenham first-team squad, with the first 10 days of January having already been and gone. In fact, it is harder to find an area of the Tottenham Hotspur team where new signings are not needed than where they are.

The right-back position might not be the biggest problem for Spurs, but a new arrival would certainly come as positive news.

Pedro Porro has had to play a very high number of minutes this season, and not all his performances have been up to scratch. Therefore, it would make sense for Tottenham to bring in a player who could give him the occasional break and even challenge his spot in the first-team.

Tottenham are behind Newcastle in the race to sign Wesley Franca

Fichajes have confirmed previous reports that Spurs are interested in signing Wesley Franca from Roma.

However, Newcastle United are said to be leading the race to sign the young right-back, while Manchester City have also made their interest known.

The Magpies see the player as an interesting option due to his ability in attack and defence, and all three Premier League clubs are aware that his valuation could be on the rise.

Roma are under no pressure to sell the player, but any additional income could be used to strengthen their attack, meaning a deal could be on the cards.

Ironically, it has been reported that Roma want to sign Tottenham defender Radu Dragusin, so perhaps some kind of swap deal could rise to the surface eventually.

Spurs are not an attractive option right now

It is important for Tottenham to remember the position they find themselves in. Having a shiny stadium and a state-of-the-art training facility is all well and good, but who wants to join a team sitting 14th in the Premier League table?

Spurs must move quickly to bring players into their increasingly depleted squad, but it will take time to convince them that a move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is one worth making.
