Tottenham will definitely bring Luka Vuskovic back despite Hamburg’s ‘romantic’ idea, says Steffen Freund

Hamburg’s sporting director, Claus Costa, has been speaking to the German media about the possibility of Tottenham’s Luka Vuskovic remaining at the club beyond this summer.

While there were big hopes for the 18-year-old centre-back ahead of this season, perhaps no one would have expected him to make the kind of impact he has in the Bundesliga this term.

The stats say that Vuskovic has been one of the best centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues this season.

Naturally, Hamburg do not want to lose the teenager in the summer. In fact, HSV boss Merlin Polzin admitted that he is dreaming of keeping Vuskovic, although the deal seems ‘impossible’ to do right now.

Hamburg’s sporting director says ‘no chance’ of Tottenham’s Luka Vuskovic staying

Claus Costa has given a straightforward answer when quizzed about keeping the Croat at the Volksparkstadion for one more year.

The Hamburg director told Sport1: “Contractually, there’s no chance he’ll stay. It’s purely a loan, and we have no way to tie Luka to HSV long-term.”

Vuskovic has previously spoken about his desire to play with his older brother, Mario, who is currently serving a doping ban at Hamburg.

When asked about the two brothers lining up together next season, Costa said: “Of course, there’s this romantic notion that Luka will one day play alongside his brother Mario. Of course, we’re in contact with him [Mario].

“He’s not allowed to train or play football for any club. But he’s in top physical condition, working hard with an absolute dedication and passion that is second to none.”

Steffen Freund is convinced about where Vuskovic will be next season

Some sources have indicated that Tottenham’s plan is to bring the centre-back back to North London in the summer.

Former Spurs midfielder and assistant first-team coach Steffen Freund believes that the defender is too good to return to HSV next season.

Freund told Sports 1 on Vuskovic: “Tottenham will definitely bring him back. He’s playing so well; in today’s football, the system clearly takes its toll. I can’t imagine HSV has a chance of keeping him. That’s where the system comes in. He’s too good for HSV.”
