Trent Alexander-Arnold gives injury update as awkward Liverpool reunion looms

2 weeks ago 39

Trent Alexander-Arnold has given a hint that he's on track to be fit for a reunion with his former team, Liverpool, next month.

The England international ended his tenure with his childhood club this summer, making a move to Real Madrid.

The 27-year-old was initially set to transfer to the renowned Santiago Bernabeu on a free deal, as his contract with the Reds was due to end, but the La Liga team ultimately paid Liverpool around $11 million to release the defender from the final month of his contract so he could play in the Club World Cup. So far, Alexander-Arnold has played in 10 matches for Madrid, but his start in Spain has been somewhat mixed.

He found himself alternating between being in and out of Xabi Alonso's starting line-up and only started two La Liga games before sustaining a hamstring injury in the early stages of his new team's 2-1 win over Marseille in the Champions League in mid-September.

Having been sidelined for a month, there were initial doubts about whether Alexander-Arnold would be fit to face Liverpool in the Champions League.

The Reds are scheduled to host Real Madrid at Anfield on November 4.

Alexander-Arnold may encounter a tense and awkward atmosphere upon his return to Anfield after running down his Reds contract to force a move to Madrid, one of Liverpool's biggest rivals in European soccer.

The defender has now given Madrid a boost regarding injuries after he was seen returning to light training during the October international break.

On Wednesday, Alexander-Arnold shared two photos of himself training on the grass with a ball on his Instagram account, along with a third image of him giving a thumbs up to the camera from the plunge pool.

Accompanying the images, he penned: "Back soon," followed by both a "soon with rightwards arrow" and "hourglass with flowing sand" emojis.

The Athletic revealed on Monday that Madrid's medical team is hopeful that Alexander-Arnold could recover from his injury in time to face Barcelona in the season's first El Clasico on October 26.

Following the international break, the Spanish team will return to action away at Getafe on October 19, before welcoming Juventus in the Champions League on October 22.

Madrid hosts Valencia on November 1 before its journey to Anfield.

To date, Alexander-Arnold has been sidelined for five matches due to his hamstring injury.
