UEFA have released two updates explaining key penalty decisions in Manchester City's clash with Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. Los Blancos thought they'd made a blistering start to the game when Matheus Nunes fouled Vinicius Junior.

Referee Clément Turpin pointed to the spot before VAR intervened and overturned the decision. Upon closer inspection, the foul took place outside of the box and Pep Guardiola's side were given a welcome reprieve.

In response to the penalty being overturned, UEFA said on their website: "Decision overturned: no penalty. Penalty cancelled.

"Man City's player, No27, committed the foul outside the penalty area."

It was a welcome lifeline for City, but Xabi Alonso's side would eventually take the lead. Rodrygo opened the scoring with a superb finish after Álvaro Carreras won the ball back near the halfway line.

Los Blancos worked the ball out to the right thanks to Jude Bellingham, and the Brazilian raced onto a through ball and squeezed a low strike under Gianluigi Donnarumma.

However, their lead wouldn't last long with City equalising in the 38th minute. Joško Gvardiol rose highest to meet Rayan Cherki's corner and Thibaut Courtois could only parry the header into the path of Nico O'Reilly.

The 20-year-old reacted well and steered the ball into the back of the net. City then took the lead from the spot on the brink of half-time.

However, VAR had to intervene once again after Turpin did not award City a foul when Antonio Rudiger dragged Erling Haaland to the ground as he looked to get onto a cross just outside of the six-yard box.

The referee was sent to the monitor and overturned his decision, awarding City a penalty.

Exaplaining the decision, UEFA said: "Decision overturned: penalty awarded. Penalty - foul. Real Madrid's player, No22, held an opponent from the back."

The Norwegian striker, who was making his 50th start in the Champions League, converted from the spot to make it the 53rd penalty he's converted so far in his career.
