Erling Haaland slammed Manchester City's second-half display against Monaco and labelled it "unnecessary" after they conceded a late penalty to draw with the French side.

Haaland scored two first-half goals, either side of a stunning Jordan Teze strike, and the Blues caused Monaco countless problems in the first 45 minutes.

But they took their foot off the gas after the break and failed to go and kill the game off, paying the price when Monaco were awarded a penalty on VAR review for a high foot by Nico Gonzalez on Eric Dier.

Centre-back Dier took the penalty to earn the hosts a point and Haaland was furious at what he had seen from his side after the interval.

"We did something unnecessary in the second half. We didn’t play good enough so we don’t deserve to win," the Norwegian striker said.

"We need more energy, to get back to more like the first half, we dominated much more. In the second half they took the lead much more."

City weren't happy with the penalty decision, with Gonzalez seeming to get a touch on the ball, although his foot was also high and caught Dier, with Haaland presenting that view.

"If you kick someone in the face I guess it’s a penalty. I don’t know. I didn’t see it," he said.

Haaland's first-half double continued his stunning run of form this season. He has now scored in eight successive games for club and country and has 11 goals in eight games for City.

He had only seven touches in the opening 45 minutes for those two goals but played down that statistic, insisting he was contributing in other ways.

"I still think I’m involved in the game, doing movements and giving space to the others," he said. "You can be involved in the game many other ways. I did my job in the first half, I didn’t in the second."
