Vincent Kompany has hailed the ‘legendary’ Ricky Hatton after his tragic death. The iconic British boxer was found dead at his home in Greater Manchester over the weekend. And since then, tributes have been pouring in from across both boxing and football.
One of those to have offered his words was iconic former Manchester City captain Kompany.
Taking to Twitter with an image of him alongside Hatton and Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, the now Bayern Munich manager wrote: “We’ll miss you Ricky. Our thoughts are with the family and friends. Rest in piece legend.”
Kompany is not the only former City star to have offered a tribute. Speaking live on Sky Sports, Micah Richards also gave a heart-warming message.
He said: “Obviously the news is devastating. We got it what, half an hour ago? I was taken aback, to be honest, because he was such an icon.
“British icon, boxing, sports, a true Man City fan. But most importantly he was a man of the people. The nicest guy ever. I remember going down to one of his gyms, I was a bit nervous because I didn’t really know about boxing, he said just do this, he took his time.
“This was before the takeover - Man City weren’t what they are now - and for him to take the time and effort, multiple times with beers with him just talking about football and life, he was a deep person. Very deep.
“He overthought a lot of things and the news is just devastating. It’s ruined my mood for the whole day. He’d be here today celebrating.
"He’s had a box here many times. To get this news now feels surreal. For someone so young for it to happen now, it’s devastating.”
Jack Grealish, who is currently on loan with Premier League rivals Everton, also took to social media with a touching message for Hatton.
Taking to Instagram with a picture of the pair, Grealish wrote: “Ahhh man RIP legend. Such sad news man.
“An absolute diamond every time I met him! True legend. My thoughts go out to his family and friends. RIP Hitman.”
Hatton was actually meant to watch City in action on Sunday afternoon as they welcomed Manchester United to the Etihad Stadium.
