Virgil van Dijk has described new Liverpool signing Alexander Isak as the "complete striker" and said he will add an extra option to an already elite squad.
The forward joined from Newcastle United on transfer deadline in a record-breaking £125million ($169M) deal and could make his debut against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday in the opening fixture of the Champions League league phase.
Speaking ahead of that game, Van Dijk was asked about the qualities of the summer arrival.
"He’s a clinical finisher. He’s the complete the striker and it’s the same for Hugo [Ekitike]," said the Liverpool skipper. "They are a little bit different but both have so much quality and have quality on the ball, can link play and have pace. That is what is asked of for the modern-day striker. Hopefully, they can show that in the next games."
Isak has trained with his team-mates for less than a week, and Van Dijk said he has been impressed with the Swede in the few sessions they have had together.
"Very good. He is very eager, and obviously, the quality has shown already. The first session, I was on international duty. I spoke to him during the international break when everything was sorted, and he needs to get as fit as quickly as possible and understand us as quickly as possible, how we train, press, and set-pieces. It has been a positive week, and let’s see tomorrow."
