Virgil van Dijk lauds 'outstanding' Liverpool star attracting transfer interest

3 weeks ago 55

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk would be disappointed to see his friend and teammate Joe Gomez leave on transfer deadline day amid interest from elsewhere in the Reds' longest-serving senior player.

Italian reports have suggested that AC Milan is confident of doing a deal for Gomez, the 28-year-old center-back. The player, the belief in Italy appears to be, would be open to moving to the San Siro.

Should Liverpool complete a move for Marc Guehi, that could grease the wheels on Gomez being allowed to leave. The Reds would be in no rush to lose the number two, not least because of his versatility, but have already signed Giovanni Leoni this summer.

"When he came on, in the circumstances that he is in, he was outstanding," Van Dijk told reporters at Anfield. "I speak to him quite a lot. I know it wasn't easy but that says a lot about him as a person and a player.

"Only appreciation. He is a good friend of my, as everyone knows, and I'm just very pleased for him that he could do it today.

"Hopefully he can do a lot more for us this season. He is my friend so I want him to stay, of course, but it doesn't work like that. I'm not the boss and it's not a friendly business here.

Dominik Szoboszlai is mobbed by his Liverpool team-mates after his wonderful winner against Arsenal

"Let's see what happens. Of course I want him to stay, but as a friend, as a player, let's see."

Dominik Szoboszlai was the Liverpool match-winner against Arsenal, scoring a sensational goal from a 30-yard set-piece.

"It's a fantastic free-kick," Van Dijk said. "We know he can strike a ball pretty well. We didn't see it too many times in a Liverpool shirt yet but listen, today it was a decider and I'm very happy for him.

"I was giving him the option to play at the back post and he was very adament that he was going to shoot.

"I said to him be confident and just go for it and I'm glad he did, because it was an outstanding peach of a free-kick.

"It's not his preferred position probably, but he's been showing in the last two games that he can play [at right-back]. Let's see what the team will be going forward after the break — we have plenty of games."

Liverpool is next in action against Burnley in the Premier League after the first international break of the 2025/26 campaign. The transfer window closes at 7pm UK time today (Monday, September 1), which is 2pm ET in the US.
