Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has offered his congratulations to former Manchester United striker Memphis Depay after the forward became the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer during the September international break.
Going into the game against Lithuania during World Cup qualifying, Memphis was tied on goals with former Arsenal and Manchester United forward Robin van Persie. Both players had netted 50 times for the proud European nation.
Nevertheless, the 31-year-old's double, which featured both the opening goal and the match-winner, meant that the attacker is now the outright top scorer for his country, surpassing Van Persie, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (42), Patrick Kluivert (40), Arjen Robben, and Dennis Bergkamp (both on 37), who complete the top five.
Predictably, the striker received numerous congratulatory messages regarding his accomplishment, including one from Van Dijk.
Posting an image of Memphis celebrating on his Instagram story, the Liverpool center-half penned: "History!
"Congratulations bro on becoming the Netherlands' top goalscorer of all time! Unbelievable achievement - proud of you."
Memphis joined Old Trafford in 2015 with many anticipating he would reproduce his outstanding displays at PSV Eindhoven in the Premier League.
Nevertheless, following 53 appearances and two seasons at the club, the striker managed to secure merely seven goals and five assists before being transferred to Ligue 1 side Lyon.
In France, Memphis rejuvenated his career, netting 76 goals in 178 appearances, which led to a move to Barcelona in 2021 after a four-year stint with Lyon.
However, his time in Spain was less than stellar at both Barca and Atletico Madrid, and he was let go by the latter in 2024.
His tenure at the Madrid club marked the end of his European journey, as the forward made a switch to Brazilian team Corinthians in September.
Despite a promising start in Brazil, Memphis' goal tally has dwindled this year, though he has maintained impressive performances for his national side.
During their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, which kicked off in July, Memphis has already scored five goals, including a historic double against Lithuania on Sunday.
Memphis' senior international career started back in 2013, helping the Netherlands finish third at the World Cup in 2013.
