Former Everton forward Wayne Rooney has expressed displeasure with Liverpool's celebrations following the team's dramatic 2-1 Merseyside derby triumph.

Rooney was particularly irked by Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson spearheading the festivities after Virgil van Dijk's 100th-minute winner in what will be the pair's final encounter with the Toffees. The Premier League and Champions League winners will bid farewell to Anfield at the season's conclusion after announcing their departures.

Salah stunned fans by confirming his exit during the international break, just 12 months into his two-year contract. Robertson has also revealed his intentions beyond next season, with his deal running down at the campaign's end.

Following the final whistle at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Salah, Robertson, and debutant Freddie Woodman reveled in the supporters' acclaim.

However, it was the involvement of both the Scottish and Egyptian stars that particularly irritated the former Manchester United talisman.

Speaking on his podcast while discussing Bernardo Silva's display and his recently confirmed Manchester City exit, Rooney seized the opportunity to voice his frustrations regarding the two Liverpool icons' celebrations.

He said: "He's been brilliant for Man City over nine or 10 years and I thought today, he was fantastic... It seems to be a trend where players are leaving before the end of the season, I just don't like it, it really gets to me.

"Seeing at the end of the (Merseyside) derby, Liverpool players pushing Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah to the fans, it becomes about them players rather than the team. Them players deserve massive send-offs, but I just don't like it, just wait until the end of the season."

When questioned about whether players declaring their departures mid-season helps dampen speculation, Rooney remained unconvinced. The 40-year-old responded: "Not really, I suppose the speculation is going to get even more. Now, 'Who's Mo Salah going to sign for? Is he going to Saudi? What team is he going to be playing for next season?'

"I don't think it stops any speculation, I'm not putting this purely on the players, or if it's the clubs doing it or announcing it.

"When you're in a team game, it's a team game and when it gets to the end of the season, especially Mo Salah deserves all the plaudits in the world for what he's done with Liverpool but let's just get on with the game and the rest of the season."

Salah netted for the Reds and earned the Player of the Match honor after opening the scoring against Liverpool's Merseyside rivals.

The Egyptian capitalized on gaps in Everton's backline, finishing clinically after receiving a superb through ball from Cody Gakpo. The 33-year-old has endured a challenging campaign on Merseyside, marked by controversy, after failing to rediscover the form that helped Liverpool win the Premier League title.

Robertson has seen his appearances limited following Milos Kerkez's arrival from Bournemouth. The Scotland captain drew interest from Tottenham during the winter transfer window, as he entered the final six months of his contract at Anfield.
