Wayne Rooney pulls no punches in scathing verdict on 'arrogant' Mohamed Salah interview

12 hours ago 33

Wayne Rooney has accused Mohamed Salah of 'destroying his legacy' at Liverpool after his shock outburst at Arne Slot following the draw with Leeds United.

Salah was an unused substitute on Saturday as Liverpool dropped more points in what has been a dismal title defense to date. But the big story came afterwards when Salah accused Slot and the club of throwing him under the bus, having been dropped to the bench for the last three matches.

The Egyptian will head to the Africa Cup of Nations next week and hinted this weekend's game against Brighton could be his last for the club, if the situation does not change.

Liverpool takes on Inter Milan in the Champions League before that and it remains to be seen if Salah will be in the squad that makes the trip to Italy on Monday.

Speaking on his latest BBC podcast episode, Rooney delivered a scathing assessment of Salah's interview, having previously been critical of Liverpool's talisman this season.

"Why would you come out and say that? He's been absolutely incredible for Liverpool, but this was disrespectful to his teammates, manager and fans," Rooney said.

"Last year, he was vocal about not being offered a new contract and he does deserve the money he gets. But he can't flip it and say what he did. It is incredible.

"If I was one of his teammates, I wouldn't be happy. This is when they need him the most and if anything, he has thrown Liverpool under the bus. He is absolutely destroying his legacy at Liverpool."

It appears unlikely that Salah will be involved against Inter on Tuesday and Rooney believes he must now try and win over his teammates after his outburst.

The ex-Manchester United captain added: "For me, he has to either speak to the manager, put something out and try and put it right or he has to leave the club. It needs to be sorted quickly from either side.

"Time catches up with all of us. He hasn't looked at his best or sharpest this season. I have been quite vocal about that over the last few months and clearly Arne Slot has seen that.

"He has done it for a reason. It is premeditated before he goes away with Egypt and I think that will be a good thing to get him out the way for Liverpool.

"Take yourself off to Afcon and let everything calm down. If I was him there would be no way he would be in the team."

Liverpool's players will train on Monday before departing for Italy, with the squad announced later in the day. Slot is due to speak to the media once the Reds contingent lands in Milan.
