In the latest episode of 'Seeing Red' the unofficial Arsenal podcast, John Cross and Tom Canton discuss Eberechi Eze's big performance in the North London Derby and how what he did differently will help him succeed in the long term
Eberechi Eze stole the headlines once again in the North London Derby. The former Crystal Palace man scored his fifth goal of the season against Tottenham, taking him into third spot for Premier League goals in this specific fixture, scored by Arsenal players; only Robert Pires and Emmanuel Adebayor have more.
It has been a difficult period for the player, and Mikel Arteta even admitted after the match that the summer signing was frustrated with him after not starting in the away fixture at Wolves. Going as far as to say he, too, is learning how to get the best from him.
“He scored five goals in the last few games against them, which is extremely difficult to do,” Arteta said. “But I could see that he wanted to prove something.

“He was upset, even with me, because I didn't play him the other day from the beginning, and some of the decisions that I made. And I just have to understand how we're going to get the best out of him now.”
Eze is a player who has come under scrutiny, and our Seeing Red podcast hosts Tom Canton and John Cross have been covering his progress each week on the show. In the latest episode, the pair covered the last two fixtures and the impact of Eze in this most recent derby.
“Honestly, Eze is a joy to watch, isn't he?” Cross said. “And, don't get me wrong, when we talk about transfer business, I don't think the quality of the player has ever been in doubt, but it's just where he's been used, when he's been used and if he's been misused.
“I think that he is such a talented player that you've always got to have options and different alternatives and what have you. I think that he is a brilliant number ten.
“I don't think he's a brilliant left winger, but he was always better centrally for Palace and I just think this is the guy that in that first game at Spurs took the game, was the central figure, dominated the game, scores a brilliantly taken hat-trick, and I just love the way that he glided across the pitch at Tottenham. Brilliant.
“I thought it was a joy to watch, and he just dominated, and I loved it. He was tenacious; he was putting his foot in, wasn't he? He was winning the ball back, and if the ball got away from him, he was getting stuck in and putting his foot where it hurt and where it mattered, and he made such a valuable contribution to the game.”
