What furious Liam Rosenior won't do and why Chelsea boss has loads of work to do

The main talking points from Stamford Bridge as Chelsea threw away a couple of points against Burnley on Saturday afternoon

Liam Rosenior was visibly frustrated as he sat down for his post-match press conference on Saturday afternoon. Chelsea had just let yet another lead slip against second-bottom Burnley.

The Blues have "set fire" to four points in their last two Premier League matches. "What has happened with me [since he was appointed] is we have set fire to four points from two home games," a frank Rosenior said.

"Anyone watching the game, it's not good enough for a club of this level. It's not good enough for me to come and say we were the better team."

Rosenior needs to confiscate the box of matches sooner rather than later or risk his team losing their Champions League status next season. Bar West Ham United (20), no team in the English top-flight have squandered more points from winning positions than Chelsea (19). That is clearly a problem that existed pre-Rosenior but one he needs to solve.

The truth is; Burnley were - probably, but there is unfortunately no way of proving it - only pushing as hard as they were because Chelsea were down to 10 men for the last 24 minutes (including stoppage time). Rosenior described Wesley Fofana's red card - Chelsea's ninth of the season, including Enzo Maresca's - as "unfortunate" but the Frenchman was far too aggressive in a nothing area of the pitch.

Yes, Fofana got the ball first and was a tad unlucky with how he ended up following through on James Ward-Prowse, but it was a needless challenge to make. It was the sixth time this season Chelsea have had a player sent off in a Premier League match. The Blues have won only one - the victory away at Nottingham Forest in October - while having a man red carded in a league match. If Chelsea are unable to finish in the Champions League places this season, that is what would have cost the Blues.

Chelsea were meandering towards a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon prior to Fofana's 72nd-minute red card. It wasn't pretty but it looked highly unlikely Burnley would find a leveller at Stamford Bridge.

Another case of self-sabotage from Chelsea's point of view ensured the points were shared. Chelsea did not deserve to win the match, Burnley weren't particularly great, but the Blues did not do enough for all three points.

Once again, Rosenior has a full week to work with his players on the training ground before Chelsea make the trip to the Emirates Stadium next weekend to take on Premier League leaders Arsenal. Rosenior's side were beaten away at the Gunners earlier this month in the Carabao Cup, so the Chelsea head coach will have that game to look back on as he prepares to go head-to-head with Mikel Arteta again.

Somehow, Rosenior needs to eradicate Chelsea's tendency to press the self-destruct button. How does he do that? It's hard to say but he is adamant he knows where the problem lies and how it can be solved.

"We need to be the better team in every game," said Rosenior. "We need to win games of football. I know what the answer is and we will address it in the week. There's an inquest after every game whether we win or lose. I'm learning about the players.

"I'm learning about the people you can lean on when things aren't going your way and you need to see a game out. That's something we need to address very quickly."

Fofana's rash challenge ended up proving pivotal in the match. One thing Rosenior won't do, though, is single out one of his players. And that is admirable.

Rosenior said: "We went as big as we possibly could because that was the only way they could score with 10 men. We still don't see it out. I think the frustration is more the last two home games.

"From being in winning positions and being in control of the game to not win the two games, that's the biggest frustration. It's not a blame on an individual."
