What happened with Joelinton and Arsenal coach Miguel Molina after dramatic Newcastle scenes

Newcastle United star Joelinton was involved in an angry confrontation with a member of Arsenal's coaching staff following the full-time whistle at St James' Park. The Gunners prevailed in a tasty encounter at St James' Park thanks to Gabriel Magalhaes' stoppage-time header.

The sidelines had proven a fiery place as Mikel Arteta vented his frustrations at the officiating, while Magpies assistant Jason Tindall picked up a yellow card when Newcastle were denied a penalty when the ball hit Gabriel's arm. There was conflict between Gabriel and goalscorer Nick Woltemade too, during the opening half, but few were as angered as Joelinton.

The Brazilian midfielder was substituted in the 94th minute, just two minutes before Arsenal completed their comeback. And when referee Jarred Gillet brought an end to proceedings, Joelinton beelined straight for Miguel Molina.

The 29-year-old and the Arsenal coach came together with Joelinton offering a shove before Arteta looked to move his assistant away from the situation. Magpies coach Simon Weatherstone guided the angered midfielder away.

For his part, Arteta then looked to reconvene and shake hands with Joelinton, who could be seen pointing and clearly still frustrated with what had unfolded. The Newcastle player looked no more settled when he parted ways with the Spaniard.

Woltemade's first-half header, after weak defending by Gabriel, handed Newcastle the lead on Sunday amid a number of contentious VAR calls. Arsenal dominated the ball, however, and were able to find a way back into the match very late in the game.

Former Newcastle midfielder Mikel Merino put Arsenal on level terms after Declan Rice's cross before the late drama ensued. But Arteta was pleased to see his team get back to winning ways and close the gap to the top of the table to just two points.

"Yeah, the belief, the conviction of the team that we are and that we can play various types of games and the team still can deliver and win it in a convincing way," Arteta said following the game. "And for me today, it's one of the most difficult grounds.

"Again, praise Newcastle, the way they play, compete, how difficult it is to play in this place. But the team really took the game to a different level, and I'm very proud to see that."

Asked about the pressure on his side following Liverpool's defeat on Saturday, Arteta added: "Well, yes, there are moments in the season, and obviously, with the style that we had already and the difficult fixtures that we had, today we had the opportunity to close that gap. And do it in a stadium that has a very recent and difficult past for us. I think it shows how much the team wants it."

Pundit Gary Neville believes this weekend saw a vital turnaround for the Gunners. "A week ago the glass was half empty, now it's more than half full," he said.

"Liverpool lose, Arsenal win in stunning fashion. They deserve it. They were the better football team. [Arteta] made really good subs, he started with a strong team. That will give them huge confidence.

"You shouldn't have swing weekends this early. But the Liverpool players sitting at home watching this will perhaps sink slightly."
